Independence Soccer Welcomes Angela Tucker as Mint Hill Member Services

April 22, 2026 - Charlotte, NC - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) is pleased to announce the addition of Angela Tucker as Mint Hill Member Services.

A native of Charlotte, Tucker has been actively involved in the Mint Hill soccer community for over five years in both professional and volunteer roles. She currently serves as a Board Member for the Mint Hill Athletic Association and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. Prior to her work in soccer, Tucker spent more than 15 years as a professional photographer.

In her role, Tucker will support families throughout their club experience while helping connect players to the appropriate pathways within CISC.

“I’m really grateful to be joining CISC because their focus on community involvement and player development is something I fully align with,” said Tucker. “I love helping families take that desire to see their player grow in soccer to the next level. As a mom of four boys, I know how hard it can be to make competitive sports work for everyone, and I truly enjoy being a partner with families in making that happen.”

“When you think of someone who understands the importance of details, can see the big picture, and consistently puts in the work to keep things tracking in the right direction, you think of Angela,” said Director of Mint Hill Lowell Windon. “She always puts the interest of the players first, and we are very fortunate to have her on the team.”

Independence Soccer Welcomes Lowell Windon as Director of Mint Hill

April 10th, 2026 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) is pleased to announce Lowell Windon as Director of Mint Hill.

Lowell brings extensive experience in sports and athletic development, having played a variety of sports growing up. He discovered his passion for soccer when both of his children began playing, which led him to coaching. He has previously served as a director in competitive club soccer and earned his 11v11 Grassroots License. In addition, Lowell has been elected to the Board of Directors and currently serves as acting president of the Mint Hill Athletic Association. He also holds a Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy and is a strong believer in the multifaceted benefits of sports participation.

“I am humbled and excited to be joining Charlotte Independence Soccer Club,” said Lowell. “The club is so well respected in the soccer community, and more importantly, in each local community that it operates in, and this speaks volumes to the values and approach of the organization. By joining Independence I hope to represent the club in a positive way while creating unlimited opportunities for players in Mint Hill and surrounding communities for the game that they love.”

Independence Soccer Club Comes to Mint Hill

March 31, 2026 - Independence Soccer Club is excited to announce our expansion into Mint Hill, bringing more opportunities for players and families in the community to be part of our club. This new location reflects our continued commitment to growing the game and providing high-quality programming across the region. Tryouts for the upcoming season will take place in late April and early May, and we encourage interested players to get involved.

“Bringing soccer opportunities to the Mint Hill community is something we’re truly excited about,” says Thomas Finlay, CEO of Independence Soccer Club. “Over the past several years, interest has grown in having programs closer to home, from recreation to competitive and regional levels. With the right facilities now in place, we’re ready to partner with the community and provide the best possible soccer environment for kids.”

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Signs Matt Levy to Goalkeeping Staff

March 17th, 2026- Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) signs Matt Levy to GoalkeepingStaff.

"We are extremely excited to have Matt join our staff. His experience as a player will only enhance the development of our goalkeepers at Charlotte Independence Soccer Club," said Director of Coaching – Goalkeeping Matt Brown. "His coaching style will bring out the best in our goalkeepers, and we look forward to seeing them grow under his guidance."

Matt is entering his fourth season with the Charlotte Independence USL League One team. He has made 31 appearances for the Jacks since joining the club. In 2025, he stepped into the starting role for the first time, making 28 starts in all competitions and recording five clean sheets.

Now Matt will use his background to help develop the next generation of goalkeepers within the youth club. We look forward to the impact he will make on the pitch and are excited to support him during the upcoming season as he also joins Jon Bakero as another First Team player contributing to the youth club.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Susie Morris to Director of Soccer Operations

“I’m excited to step into the role of Director of Soccer Operations and eager to continue building on the strong foundation of our program,” said Morris. “I’m looking forward to supporting the players, coaches, and families who make our community special.”

As Susie enters her new role, she will continue to serve as the Tega Cay Recreation Director, where her connection to the community runs deep. She remains committed to ensuring every player has a positive experience playing the game of soccer by supporting players, families, and volunteer coaches while helping create a welcoming environment where kids can learn, grow, and enjoy the game.

“We’re excited for Susie to step into this new position at the club,” said Club CEO Thomas Finlay. “Over the past year, she has fully embraced the club’s culture and environment and has excelled in her role, helping lead the way for our members within the soccer community. This newly appointed position will allow Susie to further enhance the efficiency of our operational logistics, which ultimately improves the experience for our players on the field. Morris’ involvement with the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club began four years ago as a volunteer recreation coach. A dedicated mother, she spent that time coaching all four of her children within the club’s recreation program. Today, Susie can still be seen coaching her son’s recreation team and has always had a strong passion for the sense of community that youth soccer creates.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Josh Fannin to Director of Gaston County

August 5th, 2025 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Josh Fannin to Director of Gaston County (GC).

“Josh is a great leader and his presence in Gaston County is strong”, Director of Soccer of Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Neil Roberts. “He has a tireless work rate, and we are confident that he will continue to build a strong tradition of growth and development in our Gaston County location.”

Josh Fannin first joined Independence Soccer as a parent in 2020. After two seasons watching his son play, he deepened his involvement by stepping into a coaching role in Gaston County. This past season, he coached the Boys 2015 GC Blue Youth Academy team and the Boys 2013 GC Blue State team.

Over the past two seasons, the Boys 2013 GC Blue went undefeated and captured back-to-back division titles. Marking three division championships in four seasons with Fannin leading the way.

Now, as the new Director of Gaston County, Fannin is ready to take the next step in supporting local player development.

“I’m excited to oversee both the Youth Academy and our competitive teams,” said Josh Fannin. “Soccer in Gaston County has seen tremendous growth over the past few years, and I look forward to continuing that momentum. Ensuring every player has a positive experience that supports their development on and off the field.”

As the 2025/26 season kicks off next week, Fannin will return to the sidelines as head coach of the Boys 2013 GC State team.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Hires Jackson Brandwene to Goalkeeping Director - North

July 25th, 2025- Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) hires Jackson Brandwene to Goalkeeping Director- North. Most recently, Brandwene served as the lead MLS NEXT and National Academy League Goalkeeping Coach & Coordinator for Sporting Athletic Club.

“I am excited to get started and help oversee the success of Charlotte Independence Soccer Club’s GK Union as the club transitions to MLS Next and MLS Next 2. My goal is to create a tight-knit goalkeeping group where each goalkeeper has opportunities, support, and resources to reach their maximum potential and are prepared to dominate at the next level of the game,” said Jackson Brandwene.

“As a coach, I believe in preparing goalkeeper's for success through game-like training, attention to detail, and the development of their understanding of the game and the modern goalkeeper's role in it.”

During his time at Sporting Athletic Club, Jackson was instrumental in designing and leading goalkeeper training sessions and pre-match routines. He created personalized development plans by evaluating each player’s strengths, areas for growth, and long-term goals. Jackson also managed assistant coaches, oversaw training schedules, and identified talent both inside and outside the club, including MLS Next prospects. In additional to his commitment on the field, he helped goalkeepers pursue collegiate and professional opportunities.

“We are extremely excited to add Jackson to the goalkeeping department here at CISC. Jackson’s energy, commitment, dedications, and experience will be a huge asset to the goalkeepers in the club,” said Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Director of Coaching – Goalkeeping Matt Brown. “We feel the addition of Jackson we will not only make us stronger in what is already an industry leading program but add to the culture of our club and community. We look forward to getting him here to get the ball rolling.”

Jackson played semi-professional soccer, an experience that helps him connect with players and guide them as they pursue their own goals. Most recently, he competed with First State FC in Wilmington, Delaware, a club that plays in the NPSL, where he mentored both youth and collegiate players with professional aspirations. He also played for Pittsburgh Hotspurs Soccer Club, where he continued mentoring the next generation of players within the organization.

Jackson’s attention to detail was evident even before his semi-professional career. He attended Wilmington University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies with a minor in Political Science, while playing as a goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team. During his collegiate career, he was recognized as the 2021 CACC Top XVI Award recipient, given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA in the conference. He was also named to the 2020 CACC All-Academic Team, and served as the 2020–2021 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Representative for men’s soccer.

“I would like to thank my wife, Jenna, for her support during this big change in our life and for the sacrifices she has made for me to take this opportunity,” said Jackson Brandwene. “Also, I want to give a shoutout to my three dogs Denver, Violet, and Hugo!”

Bailey Cullen Promoted to Director of North Meck Junior Girls & Girls Regional Academy North Staff

“I’m incredibly grateful to Charlotte Independence Soccer Club and the Leadership Team for trusting me with the opportunity to support and guide our young players,” said Bailey Cullen. “It’s an honor to be part of their journey—not just in soccer, but in their personal growth as well.

Bailey joined Independence Soccer in 2023 as the North Meck Coaching Director for the Girls U11–U12 age groups. Since then, she has also coached in the Girls Pre-ECNL program, which will be rebranded as the Pre-Girls Academy beginning with the 2025/2026 season.

“We are super excited to promote Bailey Cullen,” said Girls Regional Academy North Director Rhem Stubbs. “She has truly excelled since joining the Independence two years ago. She has a big future in the game, and we are looking forward to her career here at Charlotte Independence Soccer Club.”

As the new season kicks off in August, Bailey will be leading the 2013 Girls Regional Academy North. This marks the inaugural season for the team competing in the newly formed ASPIRE League, created by the Girls Academy (GA). Bailey will also continue her role in the Pre-Girls Academy program, coaching the 2014 Pre-Girls Academy North Tan team.

Her responsibilities will include sponsorship fulfillment, digital content creation, community outreach, event coordination, internal communications, and more.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Hires Tony Falvino as Boys Regional Academy North Director

Carolina Rapids Soccer Club Legacy Coach Ready to Support Independence Community and Players

June 1st, 2025 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) hires Tony Falvino as Boys Regional Academy North Director. Most recently, Falvino served as Head Coach at North Carolina Fusion, where he led the Boys ECNL National League U13 and U14 teams.

“We are excited to have Tony back in the community and at our club. He is a consummate professional with an extensive background in the game,” said Director of Soccer of Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Neil Roberts. “I am confident that Tony will lead us on a positive path as we make the transition to the NAL/NPL in our Boys Regional Academy North program.”

Wherever Falvino goes, success follows—particularly in player development. In the 2023–2024 season, he served as the Associate Head Coach for the Elon University Men’s Soccer team. Under his guidance, the Phoenix improved by four wins, finishing 10-7-1 overall and 6-2 in conference play, advancing to the CAA Men’s Soccer Championship Semifinals.

Falvino's collegiate coaching success continued during his time as an Assistant Coach at Mercer University, where the program won the Southern Conference Tournament and earned an NCAA Tournament berth.

He also spent six seasons as the Head Coach of the Greensboro College Men’s Soccer program, compiling an impressive 75-29-4 overall record and a 49-10-3 mark in USA South Conference play. Under his leadership, the Pride captured regular season titles in 2015 and 2018. Falvino was named USA South Coach of the Year in 2015 and coached 28 USA South All-Conference players, six All-Tournament honorees, two Rookies of the Year, two Players of the Year, and one All-American.

Falvino has also contributed to several other collegiate men's soccer programs, including Davidson College, Francis Marion University, Wingate University, and High Point University.

““I am very excited and thankful for the opportunity to join Charlotte Independence Soccer Club," said Tony Falvino. "I look forward to helping the growth of soccer in the community and having the chance to be a positive influence in the development of our players both on and off the field.””

Falvino's passion and commitment to soccer trace back to his playing days as a youth player where he made New Zealand’s U-17 and U-20 National Teams. He also attended Greensboro College, where he was a standout member of the men’s soccer team while earning a Bachelor of Science in Sports and Exercise Studies. By the time he graduated, Falvino had built an impressive résumé, earning honors such as USA South Conference Rookie of the Year, USA South All-Tournament Team, First Team All-USA South Conference, First Team All-Region, and USA South Conference Player of the Year. He was also a four-year starter and served as team captain for three seasons.

After his collegiate career, Falvino played pre-professional soccer with the Carolina Dynamo in the Premier Development League, which later became now known as the USL League Two. He contributed to the Dynamo’s outstanding 2004–2005 season, helping the team win the Eastern Conference Championship.

"Tatum is a fantastic coach and leader with a strong background in the youth game," said Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. "We are excited to have Tatum lead our Boys Pre MLS Academy program into the future. We are extremely confident that the players will have a thorough experience and continue to grow and develop along our new MLS Next pathway."

Tatum rejoined Independence in September 2024, having previously been with the club from 2019 to 2022, where he played a key role in inspiring players to reach their technical and personal goals. This season, he coached the Girls 2010 North Meck Tan team and has been actively involved at Richard Barry Park, supporting the development of both boys and girls in the North Meck Youth Academy.

"I am very excited and thankful for the opportunity to begin my new role as the boys Pre MLS Academy Director of both the North and South locations,” said Tatum Bourque. “Some of the goals for the Pre MLS Academy will be to create and maintain an environment that is supportive, challenging and heavily focused on developing our players in ways that will benefit them both on and off the field. Tatum has consistently shown a deep commitment to the soccer community. He began his coaching career 15 years ago at Gaston United Soccer Club and now plays a key role in advancing players from the Youth Academy to the Pre MLS Academy, a high-level program that serves as a critical pathway to national and regional development platforms.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Tristin Möller to U15-U19 North State Teams Director

May 15, 2025 - Charlotte, NC - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club is proud to announce the promotion of Tristin Möller to U15-U19 North State Teams Director.

Tristin previously served as the Cornelius/Davidson Recreation Program Director, where he led the development and organization of Recreation teams while coaching multiple competitive teams across both the girls’ and boys’ programs. His dedication to player experience, coach support, and community engagement has made a lasting impact. In his new role, Tristin will oversee the State Team programs in the region, focusing on player development and competitive success.

Neil Roberts, Director of Soccer, says, "Tristin has been an incredibly hard worker for us this past year and this promotion is well deserved. He has a great soccer IQ and is full of new and innovative ideas. His leadership is much needed, and our state level players will recognize his impact immediately. We look forward to his leadership and direction next year."

Tristin brings over a decade of coaching experience to the position, including six years of travel soccer in Chicago. He holds a USSF C License and a Scottish FA Level 2 certification. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science and a minor in Coaching Education, Tristin is passionate about long-term player development and advancing the coaching profession.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Ale Marin to Mooresville Technical Staff

“I couldn’t be more excited for Ale to make this jump onto our full-time Technical Staff,” said Director of Youth Academy Mike Barroqueiro. “Over the time I’ve worked with him, Ale has proven to be not only a trusted member of our community but a top up & coming coach within our staff. His knowledge, desire to continue to learn, and relentless work ethic will surely set him for success in the new role. So proud to have him take on this new role!”

Ale has been an outstanding addition to the Independence community since joining the club in 2022. His unwavering commitment to creating a positive and challenging environment has given our players the best chance to grow and thrive. Ale has coached across multiple levels within the Mooresville branch including recreation, futsal, Youth Academy, and currently leads the 2013 Mooresville Blue team in the Local Competitive program, which will transition to the State program this fall.

“I’m honored to join the Matthews Technical Staff as the new Youth Academy Director,” said Luis Echeverry. “This is an exciting opportunity to work with a club that’s committed to developing players both on and off the field. I’m looking forward to bringing my experience and passion to help build a strong foundation for the next generation of talent.”

Luis has been with Independence Soccer for 6 years. He initially coached both boys and girls in the Matthews Local Competitive program, which will be rebranded as the Matthews State Program beginning this fall. In addition to working with older players, Luis shared his expertise by also contributing to the Matthews Youth Academy

“We are excited to have Luis onboard with us in this new role. He is a dedicated staff member with an undying work rate and passion for the game,” said Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “Luis brings energy to the field each and every night and does a great job developing our players at every level.”

This season, Luis coached the Girls 07 Matthews Blue, Girls 08 Matthews Blue, and the Boys 06/07 Matthews Blue.

“The Matthews Youth Academy marks the first step in our State, Regional, and National Programming,” said Luis Echeverry. “This is an exciting time for the Matthews community, as we introduce a new Boys & Girls Regional Academy program launching this fall. Brian Udy Promoted to Director of Boys Regional Academy South

April 17th, 2025 - Charlotte, NC - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Brian Udy to Director of Boys Regional Academy South.

“I am very excited to accept the Director Boys Regional Academy South position,” said Brian Udy. I look forward to playing a larger role for Charlotte Independence Soccer Club as we migrate to MLS NEXT and the National Premier League, and all that goes with making such a great move for our players and their development.”

Brian joined Independence Soccer back in 2024 where he started to make an impact within the Boys York County Youth Academy. During the 2024/2025 season, he coached the 2025 the York County Youth Academy and the 2015 York County Blue. Brian was also involved with the Boys 2011 ECNL Regional South team, which will be rebranded as the Boys Regional Academy South program starting this fall.

“Brian has been exceptional on and off the field since he started with us. He is a strong professional who is dedicated to player development and really takes the time to make sure his players and families enjoy their experience at our club,” said Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “I am very confident that he will lead the Boys Regional Academy South in a very positive and productive manner. We are excited to benefit from Brian’s leadership!”

The Boys Regional Academy South program will participate in the National Premier League (NPL). The leagues schedule benefits Independence Soccer players who live in South Carolina. April 10th, 2025 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Mike Barroqueiro to Director of Youth Academy. In his new role, Mike will also continue serving as the Director of Mooresville.

Since joining the club two years ago, Mike has overseen the growth and development of the Mooresville soccer programs, which include recreational, youth academy, state and regional levels.

As Director of Mooresville, Mike took the initiative to introduce soccer to new players through current club programing such as Soccer is Fun Clinics and Youth Academy Experience Days. The increased participation across all programs is a testament to Mike’s ongoing commitment and dedication to the Mooresville families and community.

Ciara has been with the club going on eight years, contributing to the Girls ECNL Regional League South program. As the program prepares to brand as the Girls Regional Academy South, it looks forward to joining the Girls Academy Aspire League this fall.

During the 2024/2025 season, Ciara coached the 2011 and 2012 Girls Regional Academy South teams while also assisting with the Girls York County Youth Academy. Additionally, she is dedicated to making an impact through TOPSoccer, a program supporting players with disabilities.

Since coming on board 6 months ago, Molly has been serving as our North Office Administrative Assistant. In addition, she has been contributing as a Marketing intern for 3 months, lending her talents to campaigns, videography, and photography.

Molly earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication from Appalachian State University, where she also minored in English Literature. Molly is passionate about photography and videography and took many classes on the two while attending ASU. She did a study abroad trip to London, UK in the Summer of 2023, where she met with YouTube Music, and Spotify promotional leaders and learned about Marketing and Promotional techniques.

Gibson, Longtime Coach and Former Player, Ready to Elevate Club through Strategic and Communicative Player Development

February 14 ^th - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Colin Gibson to Technical Director. In his new role, Gibson will oversee the development of players, coaches, and programing, implementing an aligned cohesive club-wide curriculum for player growth that supports The Independence Way.

“Having been part of Charlotte Independence Soccer Club for the past 20 years, this organization has been like a second home to me”, said Colin Gibson. “It’s an incredible honor to step into the role of Technical Director and give back to the club that has shaped me as a player, coach, and person. I’m excited to continue developing a strong pathway for both our players and staff.”

Gibson began his coaching career in 2016 with the Carolina Rapids Soccer Club, one of the three founding legacy clubs that merged to form Charlotte Independence Soccer Club in 2019. Over the past nine years, Gibson has gained extensive coaching experiences across various programs, including recreation, NCYSA competitive, US Development Academy, Pre-ECNL, ECNL, and ECNL Regional League.

For the past five years, Gibson has served as the Director of Coaching Boys - North, overseeing the U11-U19 teams in the North Meck and Mooresville locations, along with all ECNL Regional League North the past three years.

His commitment to player development, ability to nurture talent, and communicative skills towards our members made him a standout candidate for this role.

“Simply put, Colin knows the club inside out, he has exceptional knowledge of the youth soccer industry and his views on development are exactly what our club and soccer community needs”, said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “The fact that the staff’s internal response has been overwhelmingly positive shows a strong foundation of trust and support for Colin’s leadership. I’m excited about his ability to chart a path forward. Colin’s approach to player development, curriculum, and methodology will surely help the club grow in the right direction. This is a key moment in the club’s evolution.”

Making the jump as a player to coach came seamlessly for Gibson, especially wanting to stay with the club he grew fond of growing up. He spent 11 years competing in youth soccer with the Carolina Rapids where he developed a strong connection to the game and to his community.

Upon finishing his youth career, Gibson attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. He is happily married to his wife Emily where they currently reside in Mooresville.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Nick Fusco to USL League Two Head Coach

December 9th - Charlotte, NC - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Nick Fusco to USL League Two Head Coach. Previously, Fusco served as the Charlotte Independence II Assistant Coach during the 2024 season. In addition to his role with the team, he is the Boys North Meck Director for Charlotte Independence Soccer Club and coaches the Boys U14 and U17 ECNL teams.

“We are incredibly excited to promote Nick to the head coach position for the USL2 team,” said Independence ll General Manager Greg Ashton. “Nick is a talented young coach who has gained experience coaching at the college and ECNL club level. Last year he was an assistant with the USL2 team which provides a base to grow and provide leadership in the extremely competitive USL2 League. Nick has been very diligent in continuing his coaching education through US Soccer and will have the opportunity to continue to push himself in this challenging league.”

Fusco brings collegiate coaching experience, having been named Interim Head Coach for the Johnson & Wales University Men’s Soccer team during the 2023 season. Under his leadership, the Wildcats achieved an impressive 14-1-5 record, secured the #1 overall seed in the USCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Tournament, and successfully defended their title as USCAA Division II National Champions.

“I am more than excited to get to work with some of the best players in Charlotte as well some of the top players from around the country in the college ranks,” said Nick Fusco. Massive thanks to the Charlotte Independence for entrusting me with this role in the club. I’m looking forward to providing a top-level environment for the guys to compete in during the Summer here in one of the best cities in the country.”

Fusco played four years of college soccer, spending his first two seasons with the Darton State College Men’s Soccer team before transferring to Point University to complete his collegiate career.

Independence soccer is proud to announce that 08 ECNL Academy player Maria Tapia and 07 ECNL Academy player Riley Pickens will be joining the Carolina Ascent FC women's professional team on USL Academy Contracts.The USL Academy Contact allows Maria and Riley to train and gain experience with the Carolina Ascent while maintaining their college eligibility.

With their signings, they will join 08 ECNL Academy player Isa Franco who signed an Academy Contract back in August. Now making it three Independence Soccer Girls Academy players who are now with the Carolina Ascent.

Ryan is a 3X Captain, and is entering his final year with the Mountaineers, with aspirations to get drafted into the MLS this Fall. He previously was part of our Boys ECNL Academy, Independence USL League Two team, and was on Academy Contract with the First Team.

Issac is a Freshmen who has already been making an impact on the pitch. He was previously on our Boys ECNL Academy, Independence USL League Two, was on Academy Contract with the First Team, and was a USL Academy Champion for the 2023 season.

“Nate has been a tremendous asset to our club over the past few years,” said CEO Thomas Finlay. “His ability to connect with everyone who meets him and his exceptional work in capturing the essence of our club are truly unique. Nate’s commitment and passion for ensuring the transparency of our culture through digital media are industry leading. With his new responsibilities and oversight, we are confident he will continue to excel and take his contributions to the next level.”

Nate will oversee the digital media management and execution for Independence programs, which includes our professional partners. His responsibilities also include membership communication, community event coverage, social promotion during tournaments, and maintaining relationships with sponsors and the First Team.

“Over the past two and a half years, Charlotte Independence Soccer Club has truly become a home for me. The staff, players, and entire community have welcomed me as one of their own," said Nate Friefeld. "I’m excited to keep capturing and sharing everyone’s stories as I take on this new role. Most importantly, I look forward to strengthening the relationships with our players and families, which makes the creative process even more meaningful."

Since joining the club in the spring of 2022, Nate has played a key role in boosting the club’s social presence through his photography, videography, and relationship building. This includes traveling with boys and girls competitive programs to provide media coverage to highlights the youth player experience and promote The Independence Way.

“I always had the interest in working in the digital space but combining that with my passion for sports makes it truly unmatched.” said Nate Friefeld.

Nate earned a Bachelor of Science in Advertising Management from Michigan State University, where he also served as Vice President of Communications on the Interfraternity Council for Fraternity & Sorority Life. In this role, he implemented social media strategies to guide organizations on how to promote on social. Additionally, Nate worked as a freelance photographer, collaborating with MSU Hillel, fraternities, sororities, and other student organizations.

After graduating, Nate pursued an MBA in the Corporate program at Clemson University, where he discovered his passion for social media. A reunion in the making with the Independence community

September 5th, 2024 - Charlotte, NC – Charlotte Independence Soccer Club hires Tatum Bourque to Technical Coaching Staff. Bourque returns to Independence after coaching with the club from 2019 to 2022. For the 2024-2025 season, Bourque will coach the Boys 2010 North Meck Tan.

“I’m excited to be back on the sidelines doing what I love, which is teaching and developing players,” said Tatum Bourque. “I will give my players everything I’ve got, and in return I expect their commitment and effort. Results will come later.”

This past year, Bourque coached with Strikers of Gaston County. An area that holds close to his heart as Gaston County was where he started his coaching career 15 years ago with the Gaston United Soccer Club.

“To have Tatum back with the club is huge for our program,” said Charlotte Independence Soccer Club CEO Thomas Finlay. “Tatum is one of the most well-respected coaches in all of youth soccer in Charlotte - someone whose reputation as a coach and as a person precedes him.”

Bourque attended Belmont Abbey College where he played for the Men’s Soccer team. As a freshman, he early All-American honors with 28 goals and 12 assists. His sophomore year earned honorary mention with tallying 18 goals and 12 assists. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Therapy, Bourque went to work for Novant Health as a Recreation Therapist to help make an impact within the community

“I hardly separate my soccer life from my corporate life because the two go hand in hand,” explained Bourque, a married father of two daughters. “But there’s no question which one brings me the most joy — it’s the game, no question about it.”

September 4, 2024 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Sarah Oechslin to Manager of Marketing Engagement and Events. In her new role, Sarah will plan and execute events, marketing initiatives, lead community and membership engagement, engage with sponsors, and more. Previously, Sarah was the Brand Engagement and Events Specialist for Charlotte Independence Soccer Club.

Sarah earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Studies with a concentration in Public Relations from East Carolina University. While at school she worked in the Marketing departments at ECU Athletics and ECU Campus Recreation and Wellness. After graduating, she was a part of the Carolina Hurricanes events staff where she developed her skills in event planning and communication. She later transitioned into a role at UNC Health Cary Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Specialists in their Marketing and Communications department where she worked on the executive board. Before joining Charlotte Independence Soccer Club, she worked at North Carolina FC Youth in Raleigh as their Social Media and Marketing Coordinator.

Working in sports and athletics has always been a dream for Sarah. She was a competitive lacrosse player and always saw herself building a career in sports.

August 22nd, 2024 - Charlotte, NC - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club is thrilled to extend our congratulations to Dave Carton, our esteemed Technical Director, on being named the first professional coach in the history of USL newcomers, Westchester SC. Dave will lead his club in their inaugural season starting May of 2025 and play in the USL League One.

“In leaving the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club, I want to thank so many people that have and are continuing to make our club one of the best youth soccer organizations in the country”, said Dave Carton. “Firstly, to our CEO Thomas Finlay, and the Charlotte Independence leadership group. We started this project 5 years ago, impacting our community profoundly with the mission of serving the entire soccer landscape. Your dedication to our vision of leading the industry has never wavered. It has been a tremendous experience, and I am grateful for your support, guidance, and friendship every step of the way.”

For the past five years, Dave has been a cornerstone of our club’s technical leadership, spearheading player and coaching development with unwavering dedication. He has also served as the Assistant Coach for our first team in recent years, contributing significantly to our growth and success. This included overseeing the transition of 18 players from the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club’s Boys ECNL Academy to signing USL Academy Contracts with the First Team. Some have gone on to win a National Championship in college, like Clemson, and made MLS debuts. Most recently was Joey Skinner, former ECNL Academy & USL Academy Contract player, made his MLS debut with Nashville SC.

“To the Independence coaching staff. We pride ourselves on our pathway, but that does not exist without your belief and commitment to the advancement of players. The will to embrace the club's culture and identity season on season, year on year. Love the game, enjoy the work, always maintain that we are here for the players, and the rewards will come.

Fernandes to provide considerate, attentive, and detailed development

August 20, 2024 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Raphael Fernandes to Technical Director of Youth Development. In his new role, Fernandes will oversee the development of U4-U10 youth players through technical and tactical skillsets.

“Raphael’s new appointment underscores the club’s dedication to nurturing young talent. Focusing on the Zone 1 age groups—ages 4 to 10—is crucial, and having a dedicated individual like Rapha to lead this effort is incredibly exciting”, said Charlotte Independence Soccer Club CEO Thomas Finlay. “His vision for developing technical skills and tracking player progression is well-aligned with our goals. Rapha’s diverse background, from his Brazilian roots and professional play in Italy to his current role in the US, brings a rich, international perspective to the role. Additionally, Rapha’s reputation as an excellent team player and supportive staff member further enhances his suitability for this position.”

Fernandes joined Independence in 2022 where he worked within the Boys ECNL National programming. That summer, he joined the Charlotte Independence USL League Two pre-professional staff as an assistant coach. This past season, Rapha coached the Boys 2010 and 2011 ECNL Academy and was part of the Boys USL Academy 2023 National Championship run.

"I am truly blessed to work with what I love”, said Raphael Fernandes. “Soccer has been a part of my life since I was 4 years old, and I can say that everything I am today I learned from this beautiful game. I am happy to be a part of this club and even more excited to help create a strong foundation for all the kids here, fostering their development and bringing out the best in each of them."

In addition to his commitment to youth soccer and the community, Fernandes has an extensive playing career as a professional. In 7 years, he played for Novara Calcio (Italy), Operario F.C (Brazil), and MFK Ruzomberok (Slovakia).

Fernandes also played at Marshalltown Community College and Southern Wesleyan University where he played for the Men’s soccer team for both schools. In 4 years, Fernande earned NJCAA Region XI Men's Soccer 1 ^st and 2 ^nd Team All Region, NAIA Southern State Athletic Conference All-Conference 2 ^nd Team, NCCAA All-Conference 2 ^nd Team, and was named Team Captain at both Marshalltown Community College and Southern Wesleyan University.

Charlotte Independence Giving Back

June 17th, 2024 - Charlotte, NC - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club player, Dominic Mascioli, and his mother, Aimee Mascioli, worked on a service project this past spring, with the club, to collect old uniforms from players to donate to Peace Passers , a local non-profit organization that helps redistribute items to communities that have limited access to proper soccer gear.

The idea came to Dominic and Aimee last year when the uniform cycle ended, and all uniforms were being switched out at Charlotte Independence Soccer Club. They knew thousands of uniforms were being unused by players and wanted to find a way to give back to the soccer community. After some investigating, Dominic and Aimee found an organization in Charlotte, Peace Passers. Dominic and Aimee got in contact with Candace Murray at Peace Passers to collect and donate used Charlotte Independence uniforms. Candace works with many different organizations that are looking for supplies and donations. She was able to connect Dominic and Aimee to Walter Montes from the Charlotte Ministries, who was collecting items to ship to Honduras this Summer.

Dominic and Aimee started collecting donations in February and March of this year. With the help from Dominic’s teammates, 2008 North Meck Blue team, and the club, Dominic and Aimee were able to collect more than 100 uniform sets. They spent a Saturday sorting through donations and delivered them to Peace Passers, to ship to Honduras to be distributed to young players.

When talking about the vision and experience of this project, Dominic says, “It made me feel proud that I was able to work with my teammates to provide for kids who are less fortunate and don’t have all of the support and supplies to play soccer in their community. I knew I wanted to find a way to collect the uniforms and find a way to share them, but I wasn’t sure how to go about doing it. My mom helped me to make the connections and was an important part of helping me execute my vision.”

As a mother and former soccer player, Aimee felt close to this project. She says, “Being a soccer player myself, I know the joys of the game and how playing with your friends and your community can boost self-esteem and confidence, especially in a new set of uniforms. Because of the uniform switch out last year, I knew there must be thousands of uniform sets just sitting in the closets of CISC players. So, I was so happy to facilitate Dominic’s vision and use all of these perfectly good uniforms for players who may not be blessed to have soccer gear at their disposal.

The young players in Honduras received the uniforms this Summer and were excited. Aimee says, “I loved the smile on Dominic’s face when we got the text from Walter that had all those young players in Honduras were sporting Independence jerseys and the message 'These kids are so happy'. I want him to remember how good it makes you feel to make a positive difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate. Being able to do this together makes me feel proud of the young man he is.”

Aimee and Dominic plan to continue to contribute to this cause. They have already reached out to local school’s such as, Christ the King, for donations and have been successful. Aimee says, “If anyone at Charlotte Independence Soccer Club is willing to work on collecting uniforms a second time, Dominic and I would love to assist and find another group needing soccer jersey and support with supplies”.

Boys ECNL Academy Director Jeff Bilyk Selected to ECNL Conference Cup

July 29th, 2024 - Charlotte, NC - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club is proud to announce that Boys ECNL Academy Director Jeff Bilyk has been selected to coach in the 2024 Boys ECNL Conference Cup. The event will take from July 29 the - August 2nd.

The ECNL Conference cup is a yearly identification event for the top players in the county where this year the event with feature players from the 2006 and 2007 age groups ( The ECNL, 2024 ).

"I want to express my gratitude to ECNL National Selection Director Matt Lacey for this incredible honor of being part of such a prestigious event," said Boys ECNL Academy Director Jeff Bilyk. "The ECNL is an outstanding league that challenges players with highly competitive competition, preparing them for the next steps in their development, whether that be personal growth, college, or professional play. I am excited to represent Charlotte Independence Soccer Club as I embark on this journey with Team Southeast."

Once players sorted into teams, everyone will play a series of matches in a four-day span. The format will be Knockout Rounds to determine an overall champion.

Gina Franco Accepted into FIFA Masters

July 23rd, 2024 – Charlotte, NC – Charlotte Independence Soccer Club coach Gina Franco has been selected to seek out FIFA’s International Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sports.

Gina will be taking time away from the club to seek out the most prestigious Sports Masters in the world in Europe. In her cohort of 25, Gina is one of seven women, one of three Americans, the only Colombian, and the 2 ^nd youngest. In a four-month period, she will travel to England, Italy, and Switzerland.

Gina has been with the club for two years now. This past season, she has coached the Girls 2012 North Meck Blue and 2013 North Meck Blue. She has also been a part of our Member Service Team in providing the best care for all Independence families. Recruited to play at Queens University of Charlotte in 2018, injury saw her to transfer to Salem College in Winston Salem to finish collegiate career.

It was never of a matter of if but a when Gina would take the time and commitment to continue her education at the next level.

Once Gina achieves her FIFA Masters, she looks to be the bridge of communication for future international colligate prospects and provide the endless playing possibilities these athletes would have in the United States. These are the reasons why she has challenged herself into getting into the program. To expand her knowledge in soccer while building the connections and relationships with experienced successful individuals.

June 27th, 2024 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Ana Holz to Director of Operations.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity from Thomas Finlay, and the support of the club and my family as I take on this new role of Director of Operations in the club. I am eager to build stronger relationships with our municipality partners and grow in efficiencies and processes that help streamline and enhance our member’s experience,” said Ana Holz. “While I take on this new role, I’m also excited to enter our Girls ECNL Regional League South Program as a technical coach, working with the U17 and U15 teams. The players are committed, talented and hardworking and I’m excited to be a small part of their continued development".

Ana has been with the club for the past 5 years. This past season, Ana coached the Girls 2008 York County Blue and the 2007 SELECT. For the 2024-2025 season, she will be entering the Girls Regional League South program where she will be coaching the 2008s and 2010s. Also, Ana will be working toward attaining her B Licenses starting in July.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Kevin Vazquez to Boys North Meck Youth Academy Director

Vazquez to turn boys into outstanding young men through character development

June 12th, 2024 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Kevin Vazquez to Boys North Meck Youth Academy Director. In his role, Vazquez will manage Youth Academy day-to-day operations and the development of youth soccer players at all levels.

“When considering someone to lead our Boys North Meck Youth Academy Program, we were wanting a person who has demonstrated and embraces the same values and commitment to player development that is expected at CISC, said Director of Coaching Youth Academy John Tart. “At the same time, we were looking for a person who will embrace the challenge to lead and grow the YA Program while enhancing the experience for our members. Fortunately, we have this person already at CISC in Kevin Vazquez. Kevin has proven that he has all the qualities needed to lead the Boys NM YA Program and create a wonderful environment for our players, parents and coaches. We are excited that Kevin has accepted his new role with the Club and look forward to his continued involvement at Charlotte Independence.”

Vazquez joined Independence back in 2020. This past season, he worked as the Cabarrus Youth Academy Director while also coaching the Boys 2012, 2014, and 2015 Cabarrus Blue Teams. For this upcoming 2024-2025 season, Vazquez will be coaching the 2014 Boys North Meck Blue while holding the position of U11-U12 Boys North Meck Director.

“I look forward to being a part of CISC North Meck program and getting to know the community,” said Kevin Vazquez. “I want to thank John and Neil for their support and I'm excited to know that I'm surrounded by a professional team with similar passion and goals.”

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Hires Tristin Möller to Technical Staff

May 30th, 2024 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) announces the addition of Tristin Möller to its Technical Staff.

For the past three years, Möller has been in Wilmette, IL, working with Rush Soccer. As a coach, he managed four teams, ranging from boys and girls U8s to U15s. Notably, he led the Girls 2010s from IWSL League 2 to the USYS Midwest Conference.

“We are extremely excited to have Tristin join our technical staff at Charlotte Independence,” said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “He is a well-rounded coach with experience at many levels of the youth game. I am confident that he will step right in to our environment and impact players and families in a positive and energetic way.”

In addition to his role at Rush Soccer, Möller served as the Women’s First Team Head Coach for Edgewater Castle Football Club, where he developed weekly training programs focused on player development, implemented game plans, and provided individual performance feedback using VEO technology.

Möller's previous positions include Technical Director for the Chicago KICS Football Club, Staff Coach at Northwind Soccer Club, and Director of Operations at Northwestern University Women’s Soccer.

“After graduating from UNC, I began my coaching career in Chicago, and after 6 years I am finally returning home,” said Tristin Móller. “I loved my time in Chicago, but I am excited to continue my coaching career in my home state with an incredible club like the Charlotte Independence!"

Móller holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Administration with a Minor in Coaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His further qualifications include a National C License from the U.S. Soccer Federation, Scottish FA Level 2, and certifications from the Scottish Football Association.

A Carolina native, Möller’s family is from Greensboro, NC. He has a sister moving to Washington, D.C., after graduating from Appalachian State University. He has another sister who lives in Charleston, SC after she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. An animal lover, Möller has a fluffy Golden Retriever named Leo, after Lionel Messi.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Accepted to Elite 64 Regional League Piedmont

May 22nd, 2024 - Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) announces the acceptance into the USYS Elite 64 Regional League starting in 2024-2025 season. Kickoff event will be held Labor Day weekend at SCUFC complex.

“The National League is excited to welcome Charlotte Independence into the E64 Regional League – Piedmont” said USYS National League Manager Matthew Dellaria. “Charlotte Independence has a known track record of being one of the best clubs in the region, and their addition to the league will benefit all involved.”

The Elite 64 Regional League Piedmont is a newly formed division within the USYS National League, which is the second tier of Elite 64. Independence Boys Regional League South players U13 through U19 will have the opportunity to play in a safe high-level environment against exceptional competition to showcase their skills and development.

“We are extremely excited to have been accepted into the E64 Regional League,” said Regional League South Director of Boys & Girls Erik Casterline. “We believe this platform will be an excellent opportunity for us to continue providing our members with high levels of competition and opportunities for growth.”

To best serve the club, families, and the community, the division is based by South Carolina teams and immediate surroundings which will reduce travel costs. National events that are attended will be guaranteed meaningful which can impact a team’s advancement throughout the season. The opportunity provided by Elite 64 also establishes a direct pathway to the USYS National Championship which allows Regional and National connectivity through the National League Quarterfinals and crossover playoff event with the Piedmont Conference.

“We are very excited about the work we have done behind the scenes to provide direction and focus to our Pre-ECNL programs at the club. Brandon is a tireless worker with a wealth of experience in the programming and execution of our current Boys Pre-ECNL program in the North,” said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “He is terrific fit and ready to add the oversight of the entire program to his duties at the club. Along with a very qualified staff of coaches in the North and South, Brandon has the leadership and focus to take this program to the next level.”

Michaels has been with the club for the past 7 years, putting himself first in player development. This past season, he worked with the Boys 2012 and 2013 Pre-ECNL North. For the 2024-2025 season, Michaels will be shifting his coaching efforts to our South Pre-ECNL Boys program where he will be working with Raul Ovalle. Diego Velazquez and Andrew Everhart will work together to form the North Pre-ECNL coaching staff.

In her new role, she will serve as a coach for the Girls ECNL Regional League North and will also assume the position of Sports Performance Coach. In addition to her national coaching duties, Bingham will contribute her expertise to coaching within the Girls Youth Academy and will be part of the Futsal & Camps staff.

Previously, Bingham held the position of Assistant Director for NPL Girls U13-U17 at Barca Academy Charlotte, where she coached the 2011s and 2008s. During the 2023-2024 season, she also coached the Girls 2010/2011 and Boys 2008/2009 teams.

“Brooke is a fabulous coaching talent with a background in the sport that is second to none,” said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “She will be a fantastic role model for all our players both on and off the field. Her on-field presence is as positive as I have ever seen in an aspiring young coach.”

Bingham brings extensive experience and a successful playing career to her new role. As a former player for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) Women’s Soccer team, she contributed to three NCAA Final Four Appearances (2018, 2019, 2020) and secured two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships (2017, 2018). Recognized for her individual achievements, Bingham was honored with titles such as UNC Team Defensive MVP, UNC Team Most Improved, and NCAA Player of the Week.

“I am thrilled to be a part of such a unique club,” said Brooke Bingham. “I look forward to building, learning, creating, and developing with Charlotte Independence Soccer Club."

Even before her collegiate career, Bingham distinguished herself as a standout player. She was a team member for the United States Women’s National Team for the U18s (December 2014, January 2025, April 2015) and U19s (September 2015) and was named a 3X ODP Girls All-Star Team member. Additionally, she received an invitation to the Nike International ID Camp.

Jay Lockhart Promoted to Girls Pre-ECNL Director

“Jay has been a loyal and dedicated member of our staff for a long time”, said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “His work rate and passion for the game is unmatched and we are excited to have such a driven and knowledgeable talent take the reins of our Girls Pre-ECNL Program.”

Lockhart bring a wealth of experience and commitment to his new role. This season, he coached the 2008, 2009, and 2010 Girls Regional League South teams. Off the field, Lockhart has been an advocate for inclusivity within soccer for players with disabilities. He oversees the TOPSoccer program in our South region.

Starting for the 2024-2025 season, Jay will be coaching the Girls 2012 ECNL Academy and the Girls 2014 Pre-ECNL South.

“I am really excited to begin overseeing the Pre-ECNL Program at the club. It is a very important development phase for players as they prepare to play in the ECNL and ECRL”, said Jay Lockhart. “Practices and games will help players be challenged but at the same time ensuring players experience an age appropriate and fun environment at CISC. I want every player to have this as a part of their long-term participation in Soccer.”

There is no question that she will play a key role in the development of our ECNL Girls Academy players both on and off the field.”

During the 2024-2025 season, Erika will lead coaching efforts for the Girls 2010 ECNL Academy. Her commitment to the sport, both as a coach and a former professional player, is poised to significantly contribute to the success of the National Program.

“I would like to thank our ECNL Director, John Cullen for the opportunity to join the ECNL Program”, said Erika Duncan. “I am extremely excited to work with the top-level players here at Charlotte Independence. I’d also like to give a special thanks to Rhem Stubbs and Neil Roberts for their unwavering support and mentorship over the past two years. Erika currently serves as the coach for the Girls 2008 and 2009 ECNL Regional League North teams. “Since Erik joined us earlier this year, it was clear that he was a young talent in the game and has exceptional skills as a coach and leader”, said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “The ECNL Regional League Girls and Boys in our South program are in great hands under the guidance and direction of Erik.”

Erik became part of our coaching staff in January. His dedication and strong work ethic with the players have prepared him for the next phase of his journey while coaching the Boys 2008 and 2011 ECNL Regional League South. Starting in the 2024-2025 season, Erik will continue to coach the Boys 2008 ECNL Regional League South while adding the Girls 2006/2007 ECNL Regional League South.

“I first want to thank Thomas Finley and Neil Robert’s for the opportunity to lead the boys and girls regional league south programs”, said Erik Casterline. “I also want to thank Tom McEnery and Kalla Stark for their guidance and leadership since I joined the club in February. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 21, 2024) – Charlotte Independence Soccer Club announces Jay Lockhart as Head Coach for the U20 USL Academy Carolina Ascent FC.

“I am excited to announce that Jay Lockhart is the Head Coach for the USL Girls Academy team this year," said Director of USL Programming, Charlotte Independence Soccer Club & Carolina Ascent FC USL W General Manager Greg Ashton. "Jay has been working extremely hard in the club to develop players and prepare them to move onto higher level teams. His experience extends from working with pro players all the way down to our youth rec programs. Jay has been a dedicated member of the coaching staff and continues to grow and push himself as a coach and fully deserves this role.

The USL Girls Academy team provides an environment for Jay to continue that good work. It is a great opportunity for players from a range of age groups to train together and push each other all with the aim of developing within a competitive environment. We have put together a balanced training and competitive game schedule for the summer that will also train alongside the W League team. This creates the opportunity for players to be called up to the W League team as part of the player pathway. I am excited to see Jay working with this group over the summer.”

Jay has been with the club for the past 10 years and currently coaches within the Girls ECNL National Program. He also oversees the TOPSoccer Inclusive Program in our south locations. For the past two years, he has also been an Assistant Coach for the Charlotte Independence USL League Two Pre-Professional team. You can also see Jay at American Legion Memorial Stadium as he is the Video Analyst for our First Team, Charlotte Independence. He has held this position for the past two years.

Jack Vundum named Assistant Coach to Super League Carolina

Jack has been working part-time for with Charlotte Independence Soccer Club for the past four years where coached within our Matthews Competitive program. For the past 6 years, Jack has been the Head Coach at Wingate University for the Women's Soccer team. He was named Interim Head Coach for the 2019 season and then promoted to Head Coach for the 2020 season.

Charlotte, NC (February 28, 2024) - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) is thrilled to announce a strategic partnership with Soccer Stars of Lake Norman aiming to expand soccer opportunities for younger children in Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Mooresville, and neighboring communities. The collaboration aims to introduce soccer to 2- and 3-year-olds through an intentional, secure, and FUNdamental program launching this spring 2024, parallel to the longstanding Recreation program for 4-18 year old’s led by CISC.

Barry Slagle, CISC's Director of Recreation, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership and the upcoming pilot program with Soccer Stars. “We are excited to collaborate with Soccer Stars to introduce soccer to the youngest members of the community. The focus on childhood development through soccer aligns with the club's goal of involving more children in the sport.”

Erika Duncan has been named Assistant Coach to Super League Carolina and Head Coach for Carolina USLW. Erika started with our club in 2022, joining the Girls ECNL National Program. Arie committed to guiding the next generation of Keepers

Charlotte, NC (February 6, 2024) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) welcomes Arie Ammann to its coaching staff.

Arie's journey as a goalkeeper began at the age of 13, transitioning from playing every position on the field to becoming a full-time goalkeeper. Within a short two years, he received an invitation to join D.C. United and the U16 Academy, eventually becoming the team captain. During this period, Arie also earned a spot on the US U17 National team.

"Arie's experiences on the field as a player will really help shape the development of the goalkeepers here at Charlotte Independence," said Director of Coaching Goalkeeping Matt Brown. "He is extremely passionate, enthusiastic, and dedicated to the position which is exciting to add to an already established program."

Following his time with D.C United, he signed a two-year contract to play for Watford FC in England, where he showcased his skills with the U18 and U23 teams. Returning to the United States, Arie committed to playing soccer at Penn State University. During his junior year, he transferred to the University of Pittsburgh, to finish his college career while obtaining a bachelor's degree. In his final season, Arie played a pivotal role in guiding his team to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in school history.

“From the beginning, I have always had a passion for the game of soccer. In addition to playing, I was coaching and learning the game through a different perspective. Being the Technical Director for GKicon USA in Northern Virginia allowed me to give back to the GK Community, where we specialized in goalkeepers' specific training and analysis. During this time, we produced numerous collegiate and professional goalkeepers, and I look forward to continuing this player development with the keepers at Charlotte Independence Soccer Club."

Mike to bring experience from US National Team & MLS

Charlotte, NC (February 6, 2024) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) is thrilled to announce the addition of Mike Ammann to the goalkeeping staff.

Mike's remarkable career as a goalkeeper includes being a part of the 1993 US National Team Men’s B team. His professional journey commenced with Charlton Athletic in England from 1994-1996, followed by a transition to the United States to continue his career in the MLS. Notably, he played for Kansas City from 1996-1998, New York in 1999-2000, and DC United from 2000-2002. His commitment to personal growth achieved new heights as in the 2000-2001 season, Mike earned the honor of being named the Starting Goalkeeper for the MLS All-Star Game.

"We are excited to add someone with so much experience on and off the field to the goalkeeping department," said Director of Coaching Goalkeeping Matt Brown. "Mike's wealth of knowledge will really prove valuable within the goalkeeping program, and we are excited to have him."

Mike pursued his undergraduate studies at Cal State Fullerton University, where he also played college soccer. In 1993, he achieved significant milestones as his team reached the NCAA Final Four. That year, he was recognized as an NCAA All-American and Soccer America Goalkeeper of the Year.

"I am excited to join the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club and work with the goalkeepers. I have always enjoyed helping players reach their individual goals by providing a proper framework that works for their skill set,” said Mike Ammann. “Everyone is different and has different characteristics; I take pride in focusing on those and providing the best guidance to help them improve. I am honored to be a part of what Matt Brown and the club are trying to achieve and add any knowledge and experience that I can in order to help."

Following his professional soccer career, Mike is now the owner of Purechannels, a B2B agency focused on IT and Telco vendors and distributors.

Mike enjoys a happy married life with his wife Gina in Mooresville. Together they have two sons, Arie (27) and Nico (23), and a daughter named Dylann (21), who is a senior at UNCC. All three children were college athletes. Arie played soccer at Penn State University before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated. Nico pursued track at Mary Washington University, while Dylann played a year of Beach Volleyball at Stevenson University before transferring to UNC Charlotte.

Casterline to provide player centric development and recruitment guidance

Charlotte, NC (January 31, 2024) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) announces the addition of Erik Casterline to its coaching staff.

Casterline, a seasoned coach with a diverse background spanning all levels of soccer, including successful stops at the collegiate level. Notably, his tenure as the Head Coach for the Webber International University Women’s Soccer team, during the 2021-2022 season, which saw remarkable achievements, including a program-record 10-0 start and an overall record of 10-6-1. His commitment to details and player development helped the team secure its first Top 25 win since 2012 and clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2017.

“We are extremely excited for Erik Casterline to join our club”, said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “He has a great deal of experience on the technical side and our players will undoubtedly enjoy his coaching and leadership. His varied experiences with administration and oversight at the ECNL level is something we believe will enhance our already strong national programs on both the boys and girls side of the club.”

Before his role as the Women’s Head Coach at Webber International University, Casterline served as the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota for the 2020-2021 season. His responsibilities included designing and implementing training methodologies, game modeling, video analysis, and scouting reports for training sessions and games. Casterline also played a pivotal role as an Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at Webber International University in 2019, contributing significantly to student-athlete recruitment efforts and fostering a strong team culture.

Boys USL Academy Are Headed to USL Academy League Playoffs

They did it! The Boys USL Academy have clinched a spot in the 2023 USL Academy League Finals.

This is a tremendous achievement for the program as only 16 teams in the entire country qualify for playoffs. Of the 16 teams, only the Top 8 are placed into a playoff format, looking to take home the Championship trophy. The Bottom 8 teams who qualified play in a Showcase. Our USL Academy finished at the top of their league with a record of 8-1-3 and have placed in the Top 8. Other in season stats include only 6 goals allowed, goal differential of 42, and scored a total of 48 goals.

The 2023 USL Academy League Finals will be taking place in Tampa, Florida from December 7th-10th. Make sure to tune in on all Charlotte Independence Soccer Club social media during this time as we will be providing gameday updates, player/coaches interviews, Action Shots, and more. Congratulations to all the boys and coaches on this fantastic accomplishment and wish you all well in a few weeks!

October Ends but the Fight Against Cancer is Ongoing

The fight against cancer isn’t a one-month thing. It’s ongoing, every single day. Chief Business Officer, Cory Munro shares her real-life journey through cancer. It’s personal, it’s raw, and it's a reminder that even when October ends, the battle against cancer doesn’t.

What I remember most from the craziest year of my life are the people who showed up for me. Some showed up and did the smallest thing while others made bigger gestures. Each of them was exactly what I needed at that time. Life does not stop when you have cancer, you just have to make room in an already busy life for all of the cancer things. Losing my hair stunk, watching my body get beat up by the drugs meant to save my life was tough, but losing my independence was by far the worst part. I am fiercely independent, and this was a very humbling experience.

I remember the day the doctor told me “there is no evidence of disease”. I worked so hard to get to this day but once there, I was overwhelmed by what came next. My life as I knew it before cancer was gone. This is when I realized my cancer fight would be ongoing. It is not just beating the disease but learning how to thrive as a cancer survivor. As this breast cancer month comes to an end, my hope is that you remember those you have lost to any cancer and that you commit to be the person that shows up for your friends and family in your life. Big or small, be the one that shows up.

Dear CISC ECNL Coaches and Coordinators,

My name is Peyton Peterson and I am on the 2010 ECNL team at Charlotte Independence Soccer Club. When I lived in Virginia, there was a local soccer player named Mathias Giordano that was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, which is cancer of the bone, at age 12. During his incredibly difficult treatment, Mathias went through more than any kid should ever have to. He endured port placement, 30 rounds of chemotherapy, 3 major lung surgeries, and amputation of his right leg. He fought long and hard against his cancer…Mathias lost his battle on December 7, 2014.

He has been a big inspiration to me and my family - he should be alive and still playing soccer right now. We don’t want others to go through what he did. September is Childhood Awareness Month��️. Children’s cancer is not allocated enough money to find cures. Less than 4% of the federal budget for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancer, and 250 kids DIE from cancer EVERY DAY.

I hope you’ll join me in wrapping a GOLD soft band around your RIGHT wrist for your game on September 30th in Mathias’ honor and because September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Feel free to take a sharpie and write someone’s name or jersey number on YOUR wristband in honor of your friends and family that have battled. Mathias wore #12.

We must keep fighting for those who aren’t with us anymore and for those who are still battling now.

My sister and I are hoping to make this a nationwide event for the soccer community in 2024.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Partners with Carolina Referee Organization (CRO)

Revolutionizing the referee experience within youth soccer.

Charlotte, NC (July 25, 2023) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) is partnering with Carolina Referee Organization (CRO), the top referee organization in North Carolina.

“We look forward to this industry leading journey with CRO”, said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “Referees are an integral part of soccer and our community. Many of our youth players have dedicated time to becoming a referee, and now access to top-of-the-line resources to create an impactful educational experience. This includes working closely with our staff and providing them with programs to understand the continued evolution of soccer. Special recognition needs to be given to Jason Strange, Director of Operations North for being the architect behind this partnership”.

CRO brings educational programs, development, and training to CISC staff and those looking to establish themselves as a referee. During competition there will be a designated official who is responsible for analyzing and providing feedback to referees officiating matches. Thus ensuring games are well managed and referees are gaining valuable feedback to aid in their development.

“It was great Collaborating with Kevin on getting this terrific new partnership finalized”, said Director of Operations North Jason Strange. “ We want to provide the best experiences for our staff, players, and clubs participating at our tournaments and facilities. With CRO, the quality, efficiency, and character has improved and will only continue to get better as we move forward.”

When new rules are implemented, Charlotte Independence Soccer Club staff will be the first to know. Open communication between CISC staff and CRO will provide an opportunity to better understand the evolving game.

Girls ECNL Academy Player Zoe Sellers Selected for Capelli Sport UK Tour

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club is proud to announce that Zoe Sellers, from the Girls 04/05 ECNL Academy, has been selected as an All-Star for the Capelli Sport UK Tour.

"We are all truly excited for Zoe and this amazing opportunity", said Director of Girls ECNL Academy John Cullen. "Congratulations to Zoe on behalf of all her coaches and teammates as well as everyone here associated with the club. We know she will travel and represent her family and Charlotte Independence Soccer Club with class, dignity, quality and appreciation of this wonderful opportunity."

Zoe will be a part of the first ever Women's USA All-Star team created by Capelli Sport Plus+. From August 1st through the 8th, she will showcase her skills against elite youth academies and players from professional European clubs. As part of the tour, there will be three friendly matches against Manchester United, Leicester City, and Barnsley Women's FC. Zoe will have the ability to connect with like-minded elite players around the United States and learn about their experiences. Creating new friendships and establishing international bonds. Off the pitch, Zoe and her teammates will get to see Manchester Capelli Headquarters, tour Etihad Stadium, and explore Barnsley.

This is one of the many reasons we as a club aligned with Capelli Sports as they too see the value in player education. Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Garrett Langley Henson to Full-Time Staff

Charlotte, NC (June 8, 2023) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) announces the promotion of Garrett Langley Henson to Full-Time Coaching Staff. This past season, Garrett coached the 2014 North Meck Youth Academy, U13 Girls North Meck Tan, and the U11 Boys North Meck Tan teams.

"You cannot substitute passion and motivation when it comes to being a quality youth soccer coach", said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. "Garrett is all of that and more!! He is a tireless worker and is passionate about the game of soccer. Garrett is a very resourceful member of our staff, and we look forward to having him on a full time basis moving forward.

As part of an increased role at the club, Garrett will serve as an Assistant Location Director for Bailey Road Park, and as an Assistant Recreation Director alongside Barry Slagle to provide a fun and memorable experience for our Independence families. Garrett's other responsibilities include Field Operations, Camps, and providing the color commentary for our W League Professional Women's team.

“I'm excited for my next opportunity to grow with the Charlotte Independence. I began my coaching career with the Independence three years ago as a Recreation coach and was fortunate to have wise and giving mentors who helped guide me in my journey coaching from Recreation, to the Youth Academy, to our Local Competitive program. I look forward to being able to give back to our Recreation department, helping to provide a pathway for talented players and coaches who are looking to invest in themselves and reach the next level."

Garrett's passion for player development, enthusiasm as a teacher, and the connection he develops with his players make him an exciting fit with our young players.

"I was fortunate to have great coaches who helped teach me how to play the beautiful game, how to invest in myself and my development, and how to form genuine connections with my teammates based on trust and authenticity. Getting to pass this knowledge down to the next generation while helping them grow as players and as people is a responsibility and a blessing that I relish."

As a young player, Garrett played for Triangle United Football Club, serving as captain of his team during his senior year. He continued to play on the University of Maryland Club Soccer team and finished 5th, and then 4 ^th in the world at the KickIt 3v3 Soccer World Championships in Orlando, FL in 2010 and 2011. He graduated from UNC-Charlotte, where he earned a degree in Communications, with a concentration on Mass Media and a minor in Journalism. He currently is currently working to obtain his USSF 'C' license.

Off the pitch, Garrett enjoys cooking (although not as much as eating) and frequently creates his own recipes with ingredients and traditions from around the world. He is passionate in his provocation of progress, as he writes articles on the intersection of sport and social justice to use his voice to effect change. He enjoys performing stand-up comedy and you can spot him easily in a crowd due to his big red beard, and the sound of laughter.

Barroquiero brings enthusiasm and expertise to the Mooresville Director role

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 19th, 2023) - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club is proud to announce the appointment of Michael Barroqueiro as the Mooresville Director. Barroqueiro will oversee the Mooresville Youth Academy and Mooresville Competitive Programs while also coaching within the program.

With this appointment, the club announces that the Lake Norman program will be changing its location name to Mooresville, providing clearer recognition, and streamlining communication for its soccer program's activities.

To be a Head Coach at the Division I level takes time, commitment, and the ability to inspire those around you. There is no question that Barroqueiro has the communication skills and accolades to prove his value to the club. From 2017-2022, Barroqueiro was the Women’s Head Coach at The University of Delaware. During his tenure, he achieved remarkable accomplishments, including a 33rd-ranked National Recruiting Class, 7 All-CAA Award Winners, CAA Conference Tournament Semi-Finalist, the best regular season, and the highest conference tournament seed in program history in 2019. He also coached a Player of the Year, achieved the highest win total in 25 years, the 4th largest win improvement in the nation by 8+ in 2019, and led the team to the Colonial Athletic Association Quarterfinals in the second season.

"Mike is a fantastic coach and soccer mind. He has a track record of being a great recruiter and possesses the personality we are looking for to lead our programming in the Mooresville/Lake Norman area," said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. "We are thrilled to have Mike on our staff and strongly believe he will be an asset to all our members and players."

Barroqueiro's coaching experience also includes serving as the Associate Head Women’s Soccer Coach at North Carolina State University from 2012-2017. During his time there, he was recognized as the NSCAA Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year and a National CSOY Finalist. He helped lead teams to a Top 25 Ranking in both the NSCAA and TopDrawer Soccer Polls. Other notable achievements include a Sweet 16 appearance, participation in the ACC Tournament, the best program record since 1995, a highest RPI ranking of #19, and victories over 7 nationally ranked teams in 2016, including #7 North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Barroqueiro's commitment to player development was evident as he coached players who earned spots on the All-ACC Freshmen team and All-ACC Academic Team.

"I'm unbelievably excited for the opportunity to join this amazing organization," said Michael Barroqueiro. "The Charlotte Independence has created a product that leads the way in our soccer landscape; a vertically integrated model that allows young players to grow through the system. As I took the time to identify what I wanted next in my career, the chance to work with a group of amazing people was my number one goal. Prior to his roles at Delaware and NC State, Barroqueiro was on staff at Iona University, College of Charleston, New Jersey Wildcats, and Rutgers University, each with notable program records and player accolades. Additionally, Erin Lykon, Director of Marketing & Branding, and Robyn Horner, Independence W League Head Coach & Girls Director of Goalkeeping, played when Barroqueiro was on staff at College of Charleston and Rutgers University.

Barroqueiro earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University. He currently holds United Soccer Coaches Advanced National & National Licenses, as well as United Soccer Coaches Level l & ll Goalkeeping Licenses.

Barroqueiro is happily married to his wife Nichole, and they have 2 boys, Cooper (9) and Easton (7), and their dog Grover.

Talented Coach Stephanie Pezzullo Brings Exceptional Background to Elevate Girls Programs at Charlotte Independence Soccer Club

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 12th, 2023) - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club is proud to announce the appointment of Stephanie Pezzullo as the North Meck Junior Girls Director and Pre-ECNL Girls Staff. With an impressive coaching and athletic career, Pezzullo is set to drive the growth and development of the girls' programs to new heights.

Pezzullo joins Charlotte Independence Soccer Club after serving as the Club Soccer Coach & Performance Director at Ocala Premier Soccer in Florida for the past three years.

Under her guidance, both the 2010 and 2008 Girls teams achieved remarkable success. Over the span of two years, the 2008 team climbed to the highest level reaching the Sunshine Conference, the highest conference in Florida. From here, they made State Cup, Ranch Labor Day Showcase Champions in 2023, and are currently ranked #7 with a Top 5 Award in the state of Florida. Additionally, the Girls 2008 Ocala Premier Soccer team emerged as Finalists at the prestigious Weston Cup, demonstrating their talent by playing up a year.The 2010 recently won the Greater Central Florida League and were promoted to FSPL, which is second highest conference.

With her strategic approach, Pezzullo implemented tailored training sessions at Ocala Premier Soccer, maximizing player strengths and preparing athletes for the demands of the soccer pitch. She prioritized open communication, engaging with Directors, Assistant Coaches, and Board Members to align the club's vision. Furthermore, Pezzullo actively connected with the local community through social media channels, fostering support and enthusiasm for all programs.

Director of Soccer Neil Roberts expressed great enthusiasm about Pezzullo joining the coaching staff, stating, "We are extremely excited to add Stephanie to our coaching staff for the coming year. Being a former professional player and a highly successful college player, Stephanie possesses the knowledge and background to develop our players and propel them to the next level. She is an outstanding role model for young women and a superior coach. We can't wait for her to get started!"

Pezzullo's impressive athletic career includes playing women's soccer at Penn State University, where she secured multiple accolades, such as being a four-time starter, four-time Big Ten Champion, and making three Elite 8 National Cup Appearances, and 1X Final Four Appearance. She continued her soccer journey at the professional level with the Charlotte Eagles Soccer Club. Notably, Pezzullo's dedication extended beyond soccer, as she excelled in Track & Field at Penn State, becoming a professional runner. Her exceptional performances include qualifying for the 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympic Trials in the 3K and Marathon events. She achieved remarkable results at various national championships and marathons, with her best marathon time being an impressive 2 hours and 32 minutes.

"I want to develop not just soccer players, but kids who will go on to pursue any endeavor they choose in life with passion, persistence, and integrity," expressed Stephanie Pezzullo. Pezzullo's own remarkable journey began during her high school years, where she earned All-American status, was selected to the ODP Regional Team U16-U19 and received the distinguished honor of Gatorade Soccer Player of the Year. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Penn State University and in the process of getting her USSF "C" Coaching License.

Off the field, Pezzullo has a special companion named Santos, a dog who found her four years ago while she was running. Till this day, Santos is her running partner, who has helped her train for her last 5 marathons, including the 2020 Olympic Trials.

With her impressive coaching experience, Bailey is a valuable addition to our team and will help inspire and develop the girls at the club.

Bailey brings with her a diverse background of coaching knowledge and experience, having previously worked with various youth soccer clubs throughout the region. She will be helping to build and inspire competitive soccer for girls through effective communication and leadership both on and off the field.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Andrew Wilson to Full-Time Staff

Wilson to strengthen variety of roles within club throughout the season

Charlotte, NC (May 11 ^th , 2023) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) today promotes Andrew Wilson to Full-Time Coaching Staff. This past season, Wilson coached the U10 Girls North Meck Youth Academy, U12 Girls North Meck Tan, and the U14 Girls North Meck Navy teams.

"Andrew is an up-and-coming coach who has passion and great energy in his sessions", said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. "He is driven to get better and improve his coaching knowledge and technical awareness. I’m excited to have Andrew on board."

As part of an increased role at the club, Wilson will be an Assistant Location Director for Richard Barry Park. He will be working along with Director of Recreation, Barry Slagle, in providing a fun and memorable experience to the Independence families. Other responsibilities include Field Operations and Camps.

Wilson went to SouthLake Christian Academy where he played high school soccer. From sophomore to senior year, he was named captain. After high school, he coached boys and girls middle school and high school soccer at SouthLake. Wilson attended UNC at Chapel Hill where he earned a degree in Sports Administration and minored in Coaching Education. At the same time, he was working for Soccer.com in sales operations. Upon graduation, he coached Boys Varsity soccer at Woodlawn.

Wilson has a dog named Copper and a cat named Nala. In his free time, he likes to travel to the beach. One of his favorite soccer teams is Chelsea.

CISC Wishes Emily McMillan the Very Best in Her Pursuit of New Adventures

McMillan has dedicated her time to inspiring girls and women within the club community

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 9th, 2023) - After 17 years of serving the North Meck and greater Lake Norman communities, longtime leader and coach, Emily McMillan will be stepping away from organized club soccer to take on new adventures. It is with full hearts and fond memories of her impact on the youth in our area that we wish her the very best.

McMillan will continue on the field through the end of May.

“Emily has been with this club for close to 17 years. There has not been a single girl that has played soccer in the North Meck Area that hasn’t been impacted by Emily’s coaching or oversight as a Director”, said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “We are sad to see her leave, we get it, we understand. The industry is losing a good coach that helped foster the love of the game to a lot of players. On behalf of many people and the club, we absolutely wish Emily all the best moving forward in life in her new adventures.”

Coach Em, as many have called her, has always put her teams and players first, setting up Women’s World Cup and The ‘99ers watch parties, finding any safe surface or facility to train during rainouts and routinely sharing a long list of inspiring quotes; she has very much lived up to the values of the Independence Soccer Club. She has coached many Futsal teams to Regionals, most notably winning a National Championship with the 2009 Girls team in 2020.

"I want to thank all the players, families and coaches who have supported me on my journey with club soccer. I could not have asked for a better home to grow as a coach and as a person than at this club”, said Emily McMillan. “I also want to thank Thomas Finlay for believing in me all those years ago and giving me the opportunity of a lifetime. I know there are so many amazing things ahead for Charlotte Independence, and I will continue to cheer everyone on wherever I am at.”

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Rhem Stubbs to Girls Director of Coaching North

Stubbs to enrich community with energy, passion and purpose

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 24 ^th , 2023) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) has promoted Rhem Stubbs to Girls Director of Coaching North.

“I am excited to get started in this new role. This community means a lot to me as I am a native of Huntersville, North Carolina,” said Rhem Stubbs. The soccer history is rich in this area, and I am excited to be a part of it. I am looking forward to working with the ECNL Regional League and Competitive programs in North Meck and Lake Norman.”

As part of the oversight, Rhem will be working along returning Coach Erika Duncan and longtime Coach Neil Roberts. Stubbs will be coaching both the 2010 and 2011 Girls ECNL RL, Duncan will be with the 2008s and 2009s, and Roberts will be coaching the 2005/2006s and 2007s.

This summer will also see Stubbs join Head Coach Robyn Horner of the Charlotte Independence Women’s team, as an Assistant Coach for the 2023 USL W League season.

“I am extremely excited to have Rhem move into the role of CISC Girls Director of Coaching – North. Not only is Rhem a fantastic coach, but he is also a quality individual whose values and character traits directly align with our core principles at CISC,” said Director of Coaching Neil Roberts. “Our leadership team believes Rhem is perfect for this role and plan to support him on a continued path of personal and professional growth. I firmly believe that all the players and families will be well taken care of on the field and off the field under Rhem’s leadership.”

Stubbs last name may sound familiar to those in Lake Norman. His parents were the owners of Soccer Post of Lake Norman, sharing a family commitment to the future of soccer in the area. Growing up, Stubbs attended Southlake Christian Academy where he played soccer. He continued at the next level playing at Brevard College. Upon graduating, he coached at Liberty University as a volunteer and then was an Associate Head Coach for the men’s soccer team at Concord University in West Virginia. Stubbs has been coaching with the club for the past 4 years. He currently lives with his longtime girlfriend in Concord, NC where together they have two dogs, Mocha and Tank.

Munro to channel diverse experiences in newly formed role

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 22 ^nd , 2023) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) today promotes Cory Munro to Chief Business Officer.

“I'm excited for the opportunity to engage in more areas of the club and continue to collaborate with our staff to propel us forward,” said Cory Munro. “My experience with Member Services and the Technical side of the club will be valuable as we drive the overall experience for our members and staff.”

Munro will be responsible for managing the administrative, financial, and operations of the organization. Previously, she served as the Director of Member Services for all Independence locations.

“Cory is an exceptional talent at the club and is an important key to our functionality,” said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “From introducing the groundbreaking PlayMetrics, her passion and desire to define success through automation continues to drive us forward. We are delighted Cory can be announced as our Chief Business Officer.”

Munro began as a part time coach with the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club before transitioning to the administrative side of the club. Now she has been with the club for over a decade where she has taken advantage of the opportunities to grow, learn, and absorb a wealth of knowledge across all areas of the club, preparing her for this new role. In total, Munro has over 30 years in youth soccer and spent 5 of those years coaching women’s college soccer. She graduated from Queens College* where she earned a Masters in Business Administration. Munro is married to her husband Ash and has two sons, Jackson, and McKinley.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 20 ^st , 2023) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) today promotes Barry Slagle to Director of Recreation.

“I am excited to take on the new consolidated role of Director of Recreation,” said Barry Slagle. “I look forward to continuing creating and enacting the best practices for the growth and enjoyment of recreational soccer in all our locations. Soccer is fun and soccer is for everyone!”

Slagle will be taking on the role of Director of Recreation for all current recreation locations in NC and SC. Charlotte Independence services over 8,000 recreation players, hundreds of volunteer coaches, player referees, and recreational site directors.

“The success of Independence Soccer Club starts and stops with our Recreation Program. This is the first step in our ecosystem at the club where we offer unbridled programming at all ages, genders, and ability levels. No one else in the Charlotte area does this,” said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “Barry Slagle is the person for this job. Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Jason Strange to Director of Operations North

Strange to help lead operation team as cohesive unit

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 19 ^th , 2023) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) today promote Jason Strange to Director of Operations of the North.

“As I step into the Director of Operations role, I want to take a moment to thank the club in supporting myself and continue to invest in my development.” said Jason Strange. “The entire Operations Team is dedicated to bringing the best experience to our players, coaches, families, and visiting clubs. I am super excited to continue to work with our talented staff and hit the ground running.”

Strange will be overseeing all North operations which include Cabarrus, North Meck, and Lake Norman communities.

"Jason conducts himself professionally and strives for efficiency through open communication and collaboration,” said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “He is in a quest for excellence through innovation all while creating a positive environment for staff and members. We are also excited that he will be joining Matt Brown's Goalkeeping Staff. Strange is married and has a son. Coming from a goalkeeping background, Strange will be joining the Goalkeeping Staff in developing the next generation of players interested in getting in the net.

Holz to strengthen operations efficiency and build relationships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 19 ^th , 2023) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) today promote Ana Holz to Director of Operation of the South.

“I love the challenge of scheduling and planning all the logistics/details that need to happen for our families to have a great soccer experience, from the details of how a field should be set up with signage and branding, to running large scale events,” said Ana Holz. “I'm eager to continue strengthening partnerships with our municipalities and providing our members with excellent facilities and venues. I'm grateful for my family, mentors, and Charlotte Independence for supporting me in this opportunity and am excited for the future.”

Holz will be overseeing all South operations which includes, Gastonia, Matthews, Fort Mill, Lancaster, Rock Hill, and Tega Cay communities.

“I am super excited about this new opportunity and expanded role with the CISC Travel program”, said Dana Jones. “I love working with our partners to provide an excellent travel experience for both our families and staff and can’t wait to begin working on some new initiatives to enhance our travel program.”

Jones will be responsible for working with all National Team Program Directors - pulling together and managing the travel budget / audits for all National Programs, Expense Reports Audits, Tournament Hotels, Competitive Team Travel, and National Program Referee Payments.

“Dana is a tremendous asset to our club. Jones is happily married to Rowdy Jones. Together, they have 3 daughters Cameron (26), Carson (23) & Kennedy (20). A Letter to My Team: Fall 2022 State Champions & Finalists

Fall 2022 will forever be remembered. Why? The Girls 2005 South Matthews Blue, Girls 2006 North Meck Blue, and Girls 2007 Lake Norman Blue won State. Plus, the Girls 2007 York County Blue and Boys 2008 ECNL Regional League South were State Finalists. All terrific achievements that the Independence Community is proud of.

- Liza Bray - Girls 04/05 Matthews Girls Blue

I am so proud of how our team has improved over the last few years and our ability to play well with one another, even when the stakes are high. I believe our connection and friendship we have built on and off the field is one of the reasons why we won State. We were able to play for one another and work hard at training as a team. I am very excited to see how far our team can go at Regionals this year, and hopefully make another Nationals appearance!

I am so proud to be a part of the 04/05 Matthews Blue Girls’ team. This team has given me some of my best friends and memories. Our relationship on and off the field has helped us defeat all odds of winning Regionals last year as a wildcard and coming in second at Nationals. The entire experience of State Cup, Regionals and Nationals has been one of my most proud and favorite moments. I'm looking forward to how far we go this year!!

Being part of the Matthews Blue 04/05 team has changed my opinion on soccer completely. Our team’s relationship as a whole on and off the field is something I've never been a part of with previous clubs before. Having awesome coaches and teammates who care has really motivated me to want to develop as a player. Our team has proven that we are capable of overcoming anything, beating ECNL teams, making it all the way to Regionals and Nationals. I am so proud of all of us and super excited to see what we can do this year at Regionals!

I feel like this was a great team bonding experience. The ability to come together and persevere through all challenges thrown at us resembles that bond we have created since the start of the season. It felt so amazing when we won the Kepner Cup qualifier. I didn't think that feeling could be beat, but then we won the NC Kepner Presidents State Cup Final. It felt like I was dreaming. I do realize that some moments in life only happen once. After we won, I remember taking the time to look around at the entire complex to not only absorb the moment, but also to thank God for his good grace. He gave me the ability to play soccer and he led me to this team. I continue to look at photos and videos of that day to remind myself that we really won! Regionals, Here We Come! Go CISC (Lake Norman).

I have been at this club for 2 years. I have put a lot of my time and effort into this program. My coaches have been very dedicated to help make our team better and each individual as well throughout the season. My coaches have always been there for me when I needed them most. They have taught me many skills to use on and off the field. Like, I have learned how to be a better leader for my team. The environment that the club has built is very organized and established. The coaches care abouttheir players and respect them. I have changed so much from being in this club and it has been a great experience overall. One of my favorite parts about being on an Independence team is how much chemistry our team has as a whole. All the players respect each other and uplift one another and is why I am proud of the accomplishments we had in becoming State Finalists. The club is very devoted to the growth of all their players and puts us in a position to succeed. These are the many reasons why I am proud to be a part of Independence and the York County Blue.

A season’s journey can take many twists and turns. Athletic teams have to navigate injury, illness, poor form, the questions that opponents ask of them on match day, and the whirlwind of thoughts that can prove to be a hindrance or an asset. The 2008 ECNL RL South had a successful Fall 2022 SCYSA PMSL season. They were unbeaten in league play and earned a birth in the semifinals of the SCYSA President’s Cup. They were tested in that match and had to go to overtime to get the victory and an opportunity to play in the Championship match. In the final adversity was a central theme. They found themselves down but kept working and showed the heart of a champion in the way that they made the match close. In the end, their first loss of the SCYSA PMSL season would be in the President’s Cup Championship. The Fall SCYSA PMSL season was a journey worth taking. Cheers to the team!

Local Competitive Teams Compete in Friendlies

The last few weeks something was brewing. Players charging up their batteries as they were sent to be with friends and families for the holidays and New Year. Now? They are hungry and ready to compete for the spring season.

To prepare for the upcoming competition, boys Independence local competitive teams traveled to Mazeppa Park to play one another in friendlies. This was an opportunity to establish skills that were refined during the quick offseason but most importantly, lay the foundation for a committed Spring season.

As the sun rose that Saturday morning, cars began to fill the parking spaces. Players and parents greeting one another on the fields, reflecting how their holidays went. Coaches high fiving one another, ready to get to work. It is beautiful to see the community come together and show love for each other. Exactly like one big family.

Teams had the opportunity to play multiple games. Allowing coaches to try new strategies and allowing the players to get back into a competitive atmosphere. A bright spot during the entire event were the smiles after each game. Not because a team may have won but because everyone got to play the sport they loved. Soccer.

Joey Skinner, Sean Suber, Tyler Young, and Holden Trent Drafted in MLS SuperDraft

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (December 22nd, 2022) - It was a memorable night for former Charlotte Independence Soccer Club players as they looked to take the next step in their professional careers with the Major League Soccer SuperDraft Wednesday night.

At pick #11, Nashville SC selected Defender Joey Skinner. Joey played for the Charlotte Independence ECNL Academy where he won a National Championship with the U19 team in 2021. He then went on to play at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro before transferring to Clemson University to play for the men’s soccer team. Before getting drafted, Joey was one of 11 distinguished college players to sign a Generation Adidas Contract.

With the #28 pick, Holden Trent was drafted by Philadelphia Union. Holden was the Goalkeeper for High Point University Men’s soccer team.

Draft night success continued as Sean Suber and Tyler Young were selected in the Second Round. Sean is a Defender who went 35th overall and will be teaming up with Joey at Nashville SC. He played collegiate soccer at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Tyler Young was selected 36th overall by Atlanta United FC. A Midfielder from Campbell University.

The entire Independence community are proud of the accomplishments of all four young men. They now join the ranks of other Independence Alumni who have entered the MLS. We look forward to watching them take this next step in their journey and watch them grow at the major league level.

Giving Back To The Independence Community

Over the summer, there was special development taking place among one of our Charlotte Independence Soccer Club players. A player working to achieve their D Coaching License and eager to help the club in a player student role.

Tim plays for the U17 Navy and has been with the club for the past 5 years. He came over during the merger when his team was called the Carolina Rapids.

The motivation for coaching came when he coached his little brother. It was here Tim realized the passion for seeing players develop and grow. Soon Tim came to help with the recreation soccer at Charlotte Independence Soccer Club. As his brother transitioned from recreational to competitive, Tim saw his opportunity to grow his passions and grow as an individual. This meant now participating with the Youth Academy.

Committing 5 years as a player shows that Tim is dedicated to the sport. It warms the hearts as he chose to coach for Charlotte Independence Soccer Club because he wants to give back to the community that has given him so much the past 5 years. He wants to help the new generation of players create memories and make sure they have fun.

North Technical Staff Take on Coaching Education

This past week, Charlotte Independence Soccer Club’s North technical staff met at Richard Barry Park for the second coaching education session for the Fall 2022 Season. The staff analyzed the Girls U19 ECNL RL North team.

" After a great showing from our previous coaching education at Comporium Park, it was great to see such a great number of our staff attend tonight’s session. We strive to provide our staff 2 classroom sessions and 2 practical sessions each year”, said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “The coaching education and development for our technical staff involves classroom theory and principles as well as on field, practical components. “The most recent session held on Friday, October 20, gave our staff some practical examples of session planning and execution that focus on the 4 phases of the game as it pertains to The Independence Way. The information presented by Technical Director, Dave Carton, was applicable to all levels of play and coaching experience. Every coach had the opportunity to ask questions and provide input on how the session was being run. Everyone who attended were presented with a clear picture of our on-field expectations at the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club. We also want to thank the U19 Girls ECNL RL North in taking the time to us join us this evening. They did a phenomenal job communicating with one another and the coaching staff.”

As part of the historic partnership, Catawba Park will host the club’s future soccer tournaments for participating leagues and showcase events. Independence SC will develop a team of marketing staff that will market and attract national and international soccer tournaments. These experiences will fill showcase venues such as Catawba Park and Manchester Meadows with soccer enthusiasts, youth to adult. Additional activation of camps and hosting recreation affiliates will allow the venue to become the focal point of soccer for all.

Catawba Park will provide a world-class environment to develop players and coaches of all ages. Both complexes will be utilized for ECNL regional play and standardized as a meeting place for clubs and leagues to merge.

As part of the renewed relationship, Independence SC will continue to build onto and develop the existing premier recreation program.

Once-in-a-Lifetime International Experiences Provide Athletes Athletic and Cultural Exposure

Charlotte, N.C. (October 20th, 2022) — WorldStrides Sports is partnering with Independence Soccer Club to deliver international soccer tours to the club community.

Players taking part in trips the summer of 2023 will have the opportunity to emerse themselves in international soccer culture.

The Independence Soccer Club provides program opportunities throughout North and South Carolina communities for players of all ages, gender, skill, and ability. WorldStrides is the nation’s largest and trusted provider of educational sports travel & experiences and looks forward to providing the resources for Independence players to take travel abroad.

South Technical Staff Take On Coaching Education

This week, Charlotte Independence Soccer Club’s South technical staff met at Comporium Park for the first coaching education session for the Fall 2022 Season. As part of the session, staff analyzed a Boys ECNL South team to provide real time examples throughout the night.

“The coaching education and development for our technical staff involves classroom theory and principles as well as on field, practical components. We strive to provide our staff 2 classroom sessions and 2 practical sessions each year”, said Director of Soccer Neil Roberts. “The most recent session held on Wednesday, October 5 gave our staff some practical examples of session planning and execution that focus on the 4 phases of the game as it pertains to The Independence Way. It was great to see such a great number of our staff attend the session. The information presented by Technical Director, Dave Carton, was applicable to all levels of play and coaching experience. All who attended were presented with a clear picture of our on-field expectations at the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club.”

Youth Academy Takes Their Development to the Festival

It's Time to Celebrate and Have a Good Time

As the fall season begins to take shape, the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Youth Academy takes form. Boys and Girls training twice a week, learning new skills as a step to further their development as a player. There were instances where Charlotte Independence Professional Players visited our athletes. Taking the time to showcase professional moves that each player can implement in a live competitive scenario. The training leading up to the first test for all our players.

On September 24th, the signal was given for the Fall 2022 Youth Academy Festival. From Rock Hill all the way up to Mooresville, the call was answered. The Independence Community came together to Richard Barry Park to complete. Providing an experience for the Youth Academy to put their skills to the test. Looking to try new things that each player learned during training sessions.

The day was clear as glass. It was hard to debate what was brighter, the sun or the smiling faces as each player rolled into the parking lot. Jumping out of the cars with excitement as their parents helped grab chairs, umbrellas, and any other items from the trunk. Grandparents showed up to watch their grandchildren play the sport they love. Clapping and cheering from the sidelines as they make a game defining play.

As the clouds began to move in, the games soon came to an end. The Youth Academy Festival goes beyond winning or losing. Everyone that participated all wore the same thing over their heart. The Independence crest. No matter which team you play for or which location you are from, this is what binds us together as one club. A family. An Independence Community. As games were in play, you had players from other teams cheering their friends on. This is the character that fills our hearts with joy.

Rea to help lay the foundation of the club’s Futsal Program with highly decorated background.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (September 14 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) today promotes Mary Rea to Futsal Coaching Director . This is an exciting time for the community as the club looks to build the foundation towards competitive programs within the sport. Rea will oversee growing the game of futsal and materializing opportunities for existing Charlotte Independence Soccer Club players. Additional responsibilities include initiating the creation of new futsal programs, trainings, and leagues for our competitive and recreational players. As a new program, it is important that our staff, families, and the entire community is educated on the sport. Rea will be at the forefront communicating with everyone to improve and grow these efforts. In addition to Futsal, she will hold responsibilities in supporting club camps moving forward.

“Mary Rea is an exciting hire for Charlotte Independence and the Independence Futsal Program. Mary is one of the top Futsal Coaches in the country. Creating Futsal opportunities for thousands of Independence soccer players around their outdoor seasons is an enormous task,” said Director of Futsal and Camps Pat White. “The addition of Mary will help us create futsal programs and opportunities for more of our membership. We at Charlotte Independence understand that futsal is one of the most important tools to help our younger players build confidence on the ball, be more creative, and help players under pressure.”

For the past 10 years, Rea has worked with Barefoot FC where she coached futsal, beach, and freestyle soccer. During this span, she coached her teams to USFY National Champions, National Finalists, and USYF Regional Champions in three consecutive years with the 2007 & 2008 Girls. Her commitment to game showcases that Rea takes the time to develop players and watches them grow at every step in the process. This includes traveling internationally as a USYF coach where she has a USFY Level 3 License. Rea has traveled to Portugal and Argentina twice, Madrid, Barcelona, and Columbia.

Earlier in Rea’s career, she was the Varsity Head Coach for Legion Academy, Varsity Head Coach for National Ford High School, and JV Coach for Mauldin High School. Playing college soccer at Wofford College proves Rea has the experience, knowledge, and competitiveness to strive for success as she soon enters her new role.

“I am excited to start working with CISC's Futsal Program and especially looking forward to working with Pat White and Emily McMillian to help get more players and coaches involved with the sport,” said Mary Rea. “I am passionate about developing creative, intelligent players, and I believe futsal is one great way to do that. I have coached youth futsal at a high level over the past few years now, and I love the way the game cultivates players' technical precision and their ability to create and improvise tactically. I want to continue to learn and grow as a futsal coach, and I'm thankful to Charlotte Independence and Pat White for this opportunity. I hope to be able to share my love for the game and my knowledge with the club.”

Rea will be joining a staff with the experience and pedigree that as a cohesive unit will transform the Futsal Program. Pat White has played futsal for more than 20 years. He was a part of the US National Futsal Team from 1996-2004. White is the only male Futsal or Soccer player in the US to win two CONCACAF Gold medals. He even played in the 2004 Futsal World Cup in Chinese Taipei. As part of the U.S. Futsal National Team, White played 23 games. He even played for the Milwaukee Wave of the National Professional Soccer League where he became 4X Champion within ten years. During the summer of 2022, White was one of 155 people named to the player eligibility list for the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Emily McMillian is another futsal staff member that Rea will work with. She guided the 2009 and 2010 Charlotte Independence Girls to the National Championships in Kansas City. The 2009’s took 1 ^st place and the 2010s 3 ^rd place.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Neil Roberts to Director of Soccer

Roberts to bring extensive leadership and communication skills to newly created role at the club.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 29 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) promotes Neil Roberts as Director of Soccer. Roberts will lead and represent the technical Directors and serve as a club official with leagues and affiliates. He aims to be an inclusive leader and will focus on communication, collaboration, and accountability throughout the club programs. As Roberts steps into his new role, he has identified three areas of emphasis charged to the coaching staff which are preparation, communication, and relationship building. While the club is formed by many surrounding communities, we are bound together by our crest and values. Roberts’ has demonstrated his alignment with the club development and strategic planning efforts as well as the guiding principles.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Coach Neil for many years in various positions. His diverse experience and demonstrated success is ideal for the responsibilities of the newly-established Director of Soccer! Neil has excellent communication skills and a positive approach to problem-solving. His leadership skills are of the highest level and will serve the DOCs, Coaching Directors and Staff, as we integrate, strengthen, and develop as a club.”, said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay.

Roberts’ ability to lead and communicate goes back to previous roles he has held. He was the North Mecklenburg High School Girls Soccer Head Coach before coming to the Independence. His attention to detail and strategic development of the girls’ soccer program led to accolades which included: NCHSAA State Champions, 4X MECA Conference Champions, NCHSAA West Region Finalist, 5X NCHSAA State Playoffs, and 3X MECA Girls Soccer Coach of the Year.

His accomplishments continued to compile when he was the UNC Charlotte Women’s Soccer Head Coach for six years. Here he was awarded NSCAA Southeast Regional Coach of the Year, Conference USA Coach of the Year, led his team to Conference USA Regular Season Champions, a National Top 25 team (2002), and most wins in a single season with a record of 16-2-2.

“I am super excited to be moving into the role of Director of Soccer at Charlotte Independence Soccer Club. For over 20 years, I have watched this club grow under the impressive leadership of Thomas Finlay and his TEAM”, said Neil Roberts. “I am proud to move into this position with an opportunity to support even more growth. It is important to me that we grow in the right way, and we focus on providing a quality experience for our members. I am passionate about working closely with our Directors in a role that supports them in their efforts to provide a soccer environment that is second to none."

Roberts’s commitment and competitive edge for the game has shown at every opportunity he has been given. As Head Coach for the Women’s Soccer team at East Carolina University, he won Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year, achieved best overall record and winning percentage in school history, most wins in 5-year school’s history, 7 players named All-CAA Women’s Soccer Team, and 4X Appearance in Southeast Region Top 10. When he was the Head Coach for the Men’s Soccer team at Mount Olive College, Roberts was named Carolinas Conference Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year, led team to first winning season, best single season record, and one player named to NSCAA South Region All-American.

While Roberts has an extensive successful coaching history, his commitment in youth education is worth noting. He has been teaching Health and Physical Education for 9 years at Northwest School of the Arts, taught Health and Physical Education for 8 years at North Mecklenburg High School, and continued as Professor and Lecturer at the college level. The diversity of skillsets accumulated in his other workplaces will serve in the guidance and ultimate success of this new role.

Roberts graduated from The University of Delaware where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health Education. His commitment to education continued as he attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a Master of Arts in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sports Psychology. Roberts is married to his wife Kelly for 32 years where they have 3 kids Tyle (28), Tanner (25), and Jake (17).

Charlotte Independence Recreation Coaches Complete Coaching Education Course Provided By NCYSA

Providing resources to coaches and staff at all levels is key for a successful season. August 26 ^th showcased our Recreation Coaches working with the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association as they prepare for this coming Fall 2022 season.

“We are here conducting a Coach for the Community Event which is a free coaching education course,” said Assistant Technical Director Jamie McLeod of North Carolina Youth Soccer Association. “The idea is an introduction to the U.S. coaching pathway. This gives coaches insight on the play practice play and providing a player centered environment for their teams”.

The seminar was held at Baily Road Park in Cornelius. Coaches had the opportunity to simulate games while practicing implementing coaching techniques with one another. At the conclusion of the course, everyone took turn communicating lessons they performed and how they are important to every players development as the new season soon begins.

Charlotte Independence Coaches Complete US Soccer Grassroots License Overseen By NCYSA

On August 26, 2022, coaches and staff within the Charlotte Independence Club had the opportunity to receive their US Soccer Grassroots License at Richard Barry Park. The course was taught by Technical Director Coaching and Player Development Bill Furanic & Assistant Technical Director Jamie McLeod of North Carolina Youth Soccer Association.

“The Club is committed to providing our coaches with opportunities to grow and learn in their coaching development. We recognize that by doing so, both the coaches and the players will benefit in their respective roles of soccer development that will create a more enjoyable and positive experience,” said Director of Coaching Youth Academy Boys & Girls John Tart. “In coordination with NCYSA, many of our coaches just completed their US Soccer Grassroots License course. The experience was extremely positive and beneficial. We look forward to our continued involvement with NCYSA and US Soccer to help our coaches and players grow the game of soccer!”

Coaches tested their skills and techniques with some players from the Girls Youth Academy. With feedback from Bill and Jamie, everyone learned the best strategies to communicate and engage with the players. The Boys and Girls Youth Academy start their season on August 29 ^th and 30 ^th .

Charlotte Independence Held Coaches Seminar During CISC Matches

It was a beautiful day at Bradford Park. The sun was shining and not a single cloud in sight. All the signs pointing for a great day to play soccer. What was unique was the 2009 and 2010 ECNL Regional League South teams faced off against the 2009 and 2010 ECNL Regional League North teams. A truly special moment, once again, bringing the community together to a single location.

There was something else planned for this day though. A coaching seminar.

“The ECNL RL friendlies provided a fantastic opportunity for coaching education,” said Director of Coaching - North Colin Gibson. “We had over 20 coaches from 3 locations come together to talk about the Independence Way and the non-negotiables we want all players to demonstrate within an Independence team. I am excited to see our teams and staff back on the field!”

As teams played on the fields, coaches sat, took notes analyzing the game, the structure, and any important information they would like to communicate at the end of the seminar discussion. The important message that came across to coaches was making sure all the players were having fun. While players were facing off against one another, another important message was communicated. One Club, One Love. The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club pulls from many communities, but it is the values and our crest that binds us closer. Creating an everlasting bond.

Boys & Girls National Programs Participate in CESA Preseason Friendlies

Talk about an amazing weekend! The Boys and Girls National Programs traveled to Greenville, SC to participate in the CESA Preseason Friendlies. A two-day event that gave all the teams the opportunity to face high level competition within the area.

For many, this was an opportunity to come back together as a community for another season as the school year soon begins. For others, this was their first time meeting their teammates. Learning to work together on the pitch and creating the chemistry that will lead them to success moving forward.

You can see it in their eyes. That little twinkle when the players walked up to the pitch. Waiting for the referee to blow their whistle to not just start the match, but the season. As that whistle blew, the smiles formed as the players maneuvered the ball to one another. As if playing a game of chess waiting for the right moment to strike. It was hard to identify who was more excited for the weekend. The players or the parents. As players celebrated their goals, parents jumped up and down from the sidelines. High fiving one another and giving each other hugs.

Win or lose, this weekend gave each player the opportunity to become better. To develop their game and try new techniques. Each team showcased what it means to play for the club with their character, sportsmanship, and heart. As the new season begins, we look forward to seeing the teams strengthen their bond and where that takes them in the coming months.

Charlotte Independence USL League Two Team Add Chase Gilley, Logan Gilley, Matt Skinner, William Cardona, Parker Underwood, and Luke Thomas

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 12 ^th ,2022) - The Charlotte Independence USL League Two Team announced today that they have added Attackers Chase Gilley and Logan Gilley, Center Back Matt Skinner, Midfielders William Cardona and Parker Underwood, and Forward Luke Thomas for the 2022 USL League Two season.

“This is a very strong core of players who have been with the club or legacies clubs in the past. Logan and Chase bring a great amount of energy and pace to our attack, and both are capable of creating and scoring goals. Matt will help us be really strong in the back and has shown lots of growth the past few years at UNCG,” said Charlotte Independence USL League Two Head Coach Daniel Ridenhour. “Willie and Parker are both returning players, so they know the expectations and the style of play of the club. Both are coming from strong ACC programs and can fit in a number of spots in midfield. Luke is going to be a player that will help with his versatility and ability to create, score, and defend well. With these guys coming back it just shows we are trying to build our community and hold positive relationships with past youth players.”

Chase and Logan are brothers who play at Robert Morrison University. Both were part of the ECNL Academy Team that won the ECNL Championship during the 2020-2021 season. “I look forward to joining the Independence this season,” said Chase Gilley. “Especially reconnecting and playing with my old teammates.” “I can’t wait to play with my teammates again and get back to making memories with all of them,” said Logan Gilley.

Matt went to Lake Norman Charter and now plays for The University of North Carolina Greensboro. During his freshmen season, he earned SoCon Freshmen All Conference.

“Super excited to come play for my hometown in Charlotte,” said Matt Skinner. “It's a great opportunity to play at a high level with guys I grew up with. I hope to play a big role on the team, and possibly break into the first team.”

William Cardona is a returning player for the ULS League Two team for the second time. He currently plays at Virginia Tech University. Before college, he played for Charlotte Soccer Association.

“I’m looking forward to improving with the team from each year to year,” William Cardona.

Parker is another player that came from Charlotte Impendence Soccer Club. He played with the Carolina Rapids Academy since he was 13 years old before the transition into Charlotte Independence. His team went to DA playoffs two years in a row, and in one of those years, Parker was the top goal scorer. Parker now plays on the North Carolina State University Men’s Team.

“I’m extremely excited to come back to the program that has been my home for so many years,” said Parker Underwood.

Luke is a rising junior on the Duke University Men's Soccer team, and he played in 10 matches this past season with 1 goal and 3 assists. His most recent club team was the Charlotte Eagles USL Academy last summer, where he had 9 goals and 11 assists in 13 games, and we won the US Club Soccer National Championship. Luke also played for the U19 Charlotte Independence DA team during his senior year of high school.

“I'm excited to return to the Charlotte Independence and join a great team and coaching staff,” said Luke Thomas. “I look forward to see what we can accomplish in this upcoming USL2 season.”

The Charlotte Independence Second Team kickoff their 2022 season on Sunday, May 15 at 7:00 PM (ET). The Jacks will host Charlotte Eagles at Manchester Meadows.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 11 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence USL League Two Team announced today that they have added Midfielders Christian Thomas, Rob Tomlin, Goalkeepers Bryce Jones, Haruki Yamashita, and Forward Jalen Anderson for the 2022 USL League Two season.

“We are eager to get these guys into training and preparing for our first league match on May 15 ^th . Bryce and Haruki will certainly give us strong depth and increase the training environment atmosphere within our GK union,” said Head Coach Daniel Ridenhour. “Rob can play in slot in multiple slots and really is another good leadership piece to the group with his playing background already with USL 2 experience. Christian and Jalen are dynamic attacking players who have pace and creativity. They both are always trying to get forward and attack which is one of our guiding principles as a club.

I would be remiss not to thank Aidan Heaney, Eric Aslop, Brian McMahon, and Manbi Nyepon for their relationships they have built over time with the club staff here and encouraging their college players to be with us here at the Independence 2.”

Christian currently plays at Greensboro College where he helped lead the to conference tournament champions in Spring 2021 as Captain. Beforehand, he played with Queen City FC (UPSL 2022), Carolina Dynamo (2018), Carolina Rapids (2017).

“I am excited to get out every day and push myself to get better with the other great players on the team for the summer,” said Christian Thomas.

Rob’s hometown is Aylesbury, England. He currently plays for Palm Beach Atlantic University Men’s Soccer Team. Most recently, he played for Lionsbridge FC & Des Moines Menace.

“Very excited to get going. Charlotte is a great area, and the Independence is a widely respected team with great coaches,” said Rob Tomlin. “I saw it as the perfect place to spend the USL League Two season, to continue my development with a clear pathway to the professional level.”

Bryce is entering his second year with the Charlotte Independence USL League Two team. His first year was when he was attending Rock Hill High School. He currently attends Limestone University where he plays on the Men’s Soccer Team.

“I love playing for this club and get to do it all over again,” said Bryce Jones. “The experience has helped my development as a player and look forward in meeting the rest of the team.”

Haruki was born in Kawasaki, Japan and went to Mallard Creek High School in North Carolina. He is a goalie for the University of North Carolina Wilmington Men’s Soccer Team. “I am very excited to play for this team,” said Haruki Yamashita. The ability to help the team have a great success this summer is something I look forward too.” Haruki is teammates with Jalen who is originally from Connecticut. Before heading to UNCW, Jalen spent the last few years of high school in Houston, Texas where he played for the Houston Dynamo Academy. “I’m extremely excited to work with a great group of players and coaches,” said Jalen Anderson. “Everyone shows the dedication and passion to the game.”

Players ready to leave a mark on the 2022 Season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 6 ^th ,2022) - The Charlotte Independence USL League Two Team announced today that they have added Defender Dylan Mitchiner, Midfielder Jack Bole and Midfielder Noah Smith for the 2022 USL League Two season.

“It is great to get three guys into the team that are very seasoned and mature. Our club is trying to maintain these relationships over time and help continue the path to pro. Dylan brings a great element of maturity and leadership into the group. He has shown his qualities at Army West Point and will help solidify our backline. Noah will help us continue to develop our culture. He knows what winning looks like with the Independence and will bring a great amount of grit to the team. Jack has the ability to get up and down the flank as an outside back. Really see him helping to provide energy and a spark to our attack. Really happy these guys have committed to us here with the Independence 2.”

Dylan currently attends Army West Point where he has one more season to play. Before college, he played in the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club’s Academy Program. In his last three years with the academy, he was named Captain.

“I’m looking forward to competing again back on my home fields,” said Dylan Mitchiner.

Jack played three years at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro before transferring to Florida Gulf Coast University for this coming 2022 fall season. In High School, Jack was a 3X All-Conference and All-Area selection, Naples Daily News Boys Soccer Player of the Year, FHSAA All-State, FHSAA 3A District 18 Most Valuable Player and won a CASL title.

“I am looking forward to coming back up to North Carolina for the summer,” said Jack Bole. “I’m ready to play for a great club that is going to compete to win titles.”

Noah is currently a member of the Providence College Men’s Soccer Team that ended the 2021 NCAA Division I Season ranked 18th by the United Soccer Coaches Poll, after making the 2021 Big East Tournament Finals and NCAA Division I Sweet Sixteen. Previously, Noah played with the Charlotte Independence ECNL Academy U19’s (2020-2021) that won the 2021 ECNL U19 National Championship, and the D.C. United U19’s (2019-2020). He also participated in several U.S. Soccer Training Center events, as well as being called into the U.S. Youth Futsal (USYF) National Camp.

"I’m excited to return to Charlotte Independence and the competitive and professional environment it provides,” said Noah Smith.

All three players play at Queens University of Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 3 ^rd ,2022) - The Charlotte Independence USL League Two Team announced today that they have added Midfielders Caio Brandao, Matheus Pereira, and Attacker Filipe Mendonca for the 2022 USL2 season. All three players attend and play for Queens University of Charlotte Men’s Soccer team.

“We are grateful for our relationship with coach Oliver Caracas at Queens to help us secure the addition of Caio, Matheus, and Filipe. They all bring something different to the table, but all fit very well into the Independence game model,” said Charlotte Independence USL2 Head Coach Daniel Ridenhour. “Very special to get Filipe back into the club as he was with the program last summer and knows what the league is all about. He is a proven goal scorer. Caio and Matheus will help solidify and strengthen our midfield. They have qualities which will allow us to get the ball when needed but also provide us really with the ability to get forward. Relationships are at the heart of the group and the staff, and I look forward to building those we these three good young men.”

During the 2019/2020 season, Caio was named SAC All conference team and All Southeast Region Team. He will be a redshirt senior for this coming season. In 2016, Caio’s High School team, Montverde Academy, won the National Championship his junior year.

“I’m really looking forward for my first season with Charlotte Independence,” stated Caio. “I hope we can accomplish great things and perform really well as a group.”

Matheus will look to bring his USL2 experience and share it among the team. In 2021, he played for the Green Bay Voyageurs and in 2019, he played for Tormenta FC 2 where they were crowned conference champion. Before heading to Queens to play for the 2022 season, Matheus played at Marquette University & Marshalltown Community College. During Matheus Junior year at Marquette, the men’s team were Big East Tournament Champion and appeared in the Sweet-16 Nationals. His freshmen and junior seasons at Marshalltown Community College included: 2X Regional Champions, District Champions, 2018 All-Conference Second-Team, 2019 All-Conference First-Team, and 2019 MVP Offensive Player.

“I hope to perform well to help our team and accomplish great things both collective and individually,” stated Matheus on returning to the Independence for another season.

Filipe Mendonca is from Salvador Brazil and a returning member of the Charlotte Independence Second Team. While playing at Queens, Filipe was named SAC Conference Top Scorer, SAC Conference leader in points, SAC Conference leader in goals per match, Conference leader in points per match, Nationally ranked 9th Top scorer, Nationally ranked 10th in points All- Conference first team, D2CAA All- Southeast Region first team. Like Matheus, Filipe has one more season with the Royals and will graduate December 2022.

With Charlotte Independence 2 I’ll have the opportunity to play among many talented players that will help me make to the next level,” stated Filipe.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Daniel Ridenhour as Head Coach to Men’s USL League Two Team

Ridenhour ready to challenge the competitive landscape fo r USL League Two Season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 27 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club today promoted Daniel Ridenhour as Head Coach to the Men’s USL League Two team. Previously, he was a Head Coach for the Boys Pre-Academy Program. Ridenhour also serves as the Head Coach at Winthrop University for the Men’s Soccer team. His character as a coach and the commitment to develop talent proved the club did not have to look far.

“I appreciate Thomas and Dave believing in me to help move the USL League Two team forward this summer. Thrilled to continue with the Independence in a different role than I have had the past three years. Working with senior players at the League Two level will be a new challenge”, said Daniel Ridenhour. “Just as players should grow, I firmly believe coaches have to grow and learn as well. I do appreciate my wife, Emily, with her support in taking on this new endeavor. She is a rock behind everything our family does. Very eager to get with the rest of our staff to help chart the course together collectively”.

It is evident that Ridenhour did not waste time at Winthrop University. He coached players to ANSCAA/Adidas all-South Atlantic team, NSCAA/Adidas All-South Atlantic team, Big South Player of the Year, MAC Herman Watch List, All Big South team, All Big South Freshmen team, and Big South Tournament MVP. He has also coached 27 players who have gone onto play in MLS, USL Championship, USL League 1, as well as 6 other leagues around the world.

“The most important part will be getting on the field with the players and being able to continue to develop them as players and as young men within the 5 C’s of the club. Hopefully, the USL League Two team continues to be a bridge for our top players to the pro ranks and for our younger players as a view to see what is possible”.

Everywhere that Ridenhour has gone, the trail of success followed. He was the Director of Winthrop Soccer Camps, Head Coach for Discoveries Soccer Club, Coached for Charlotte United FC, and Coached for USYS Region III ODP.

“Daniel is a proven coach at the youth and collegiate level. He is a perfect fit for these young men looking to improve their game and get to the next stage”, said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “Daniel has played a significant role in the pre-academy age groups for us these past few years and it will be great to see him on the other end of the player development ladder at the club. Ridenhour extensive knowledge in soccer stems to his college days where he played for on the men’s soccer team at Old Dominion University where in 2000, he was named team captain. He also played for the U.S. Youth Soccer Region III team where he was a team member for three seasons and was a pool member for five.

Ridenhour earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with the emphasis in Sport Management upon graduation. He later committed to further his education as he earned a Master of Science in Sport Administration from Georgia State University. Ridenhour is married to his wife Emily for 15 years where they have four children: Phoebe, Winnie, Paco and Captain. They currently reside in Rock Hill.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Hires Raphael Fernandes to Join Boys ECNL National Program Staff and USL Coaching Staff

Fernandes to bring International playing experience and extensive history in player development to propel ECNL and USL programs forward.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 20 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club today named Raphael Fernandes as Assistant Coach to the Charlotte Independence USL 2 Men’s soccer team and Boys ECNL National Program Coaching Staff. Previously, Fernandes was the Soccer Operations Head Lead Trainer at Toca Football and the Head Coach at United Futbol Academy.

“I am really excited to be part of a great club”, said Raphael Fernandes. “I can’t wait to share my knowledge and experience to help all players to improve every day to become a better player and human.”

Fernandes commitment in providing lessons to MLS players and the Women’s National team ensures our Boys ECNL and USL players are ready to take their next step in competitive training and apply it to the upcoming season. Besides his experience in player development, Fernandes also played the game professionally. In 7 years, he played for Novara Calcio (Italy), Operario F.C (Brazil), and MFK Ruzomberok (Slovakia). The ability to bring an international perspective will contribute to enhance the perspective the game is played. Soccer is a game of adaptability and playing for multiple clubs in different countries shows Fernandes willingness to adapt and build a foundation within each community.

Fernandes attended Marshalltown Community College and Southern Wesleyan University where he played for the Men’s soccer team for both schools. In 4 years, Fernande earned NJCAA Region XI Men's Soccer 1 ^st and 2 ^nd Team All Region, NAIA Southern State Athletic Conference All-Conference 2 ^nd Team, NCCAA All-Conference 2 ^nd Team, and was named Team Captain at both Marshalltown Community College and Southern Wesleyan University. There is no questioning that Fernandes is a leader of men. We are excited for him to showcase what true character development and help lead this team on the path to success.

Burns to bring developmental growth to transcend Boys ECNL to the national stage.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 19 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club today hired Jonathan Burns who will work within Boys ECNL National Programming. Previously, he was the Executive Director at Florida Celtic Soccer Club for 6 years. Through player analysis and establishing constant communication among departments, Burns has shown the commitment to put every athlete in the best position to succeed. He also serves as the Executive Director for the North American Scottish Coaches Association.

“It's an honor to be joining such a prestigious and ambitious club”, said Johnny Burns. “I cannot wait to get started with the players and look forward to playing a small part in this club's already fantastic culture and brilliant coaching staff."

Some notable achievements during his time at Florida Celtic Soccer Club include, growing the number of players developed by 140, produced the most players in the club’s history committed to college programs (36 in four years with 20 going to D1 programs), helped a player earn a selection to the US National Team, and oversaw the club’s induction into the NPL structure due to its performance and newly inducted club vision. There is no doubt that Burns will be a guiding hand within our community so that each child has the ability reach their full potential.

Before taking on his role at Florida Celtic Soccer Club, Burns was the Assistant Head Coach at Lakeland Tropics. Here he designed and delivered training sessions that were demanding to push each athlete’s ability to get better. While focused on his players development, he also invested in understanding his opponent’s craft and makeup. By relaying a detailed report to his players, it put them at an advantage to be successful.

“Jonny can flat out coach, the players that get to work with him will have such a steep curve this coming year”, said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “We’re looking forward to Jonny spreading his wings in our club and working with our coaching education and professional development team. His time at Florida Celtic Soccer Club was not the first as he was the Youth Academy Coach for Celtic FC Academy in Scotland for 8 years from 2009-2016. Achievements include players earning big moves and reaching the Celtic first-team squad. Some names include Josh Adam (now with Manchester City), and Barry Hepburn (now with Bayern Munich).

Burns has a dog named Milo who is as excited to move to Charlotte and join the Independence family.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 15th, 2022) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club is excited to announce a 10-year partnership with the Town of Mooresville. Of significant note, the addition of new synthetic fields and other upgrades to the Mazeppa Park complex where our athletes and community have fun, develop and build relationships through yearlong soccer programming and tournaments.

“The Town of Mooresville is excited to formalize a partnership with Charlotte Independence Soccer Club on these upgrades to Mazeppa Park”, said Assistant Parks & Recreation Director Darrin Hucks. “We would like to thank the club for their continued efforts to grow the game of soccer in Mooresville and for their long-term commitment to the community and to Mazeppa Park.”

New synthetic fields will replace the current grass surfaces which will help minimize weather impacts on programs and tournaments. The club’s long term commitment to the Mooresville community is to provide all members the opportunity to have fun and compete in a professional and safe environment. The addition of synthetic fields will allow the Independence to execute that promise.

Warham to bring MLS/USL playing experience and 20+ years of coaching to redefine expectations and elevate the Boys ECNL.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 7 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club today named Darren Warham as Director of Boys ECNL. Previously, he was the Director of Coaching at Lonestar Soccer Club for the Boys ECNL & Elite teams located in Austin, TX for 9 years. Warham's ability to develop boys and girls programs and establish a long-term pattern of success is unquestionable. Most notably, he coached the U15 ECNL STH to ECNL Nationals where they finished 6 ^th in the country and coached the U17 ECNL STH to an undefeated season in the Texas Conference, both during the 2020-2021 season. He is also a member of the ECNL Board for the ECNL Texas Conference since the league started.

"I would like to thank Thomas, and everyone associated with the Charlotte Independence family for this opportunity to become part of the organization. Before Warham joined Lonestar Soccer Club in 2013, he was the Director of Coaching at Virginia Rush Soccer Club. For 10 years, he showed the dedication to guide each player to become the best version of themselves. The competitive attitude to improve, set and accomplish goal after goal is an expectation Warham has for his players and aligns with the club values.

Not only does Warham have 20+ years of coaching under his belt, but he also understands the effort it takes to play at the next level. He was drafted by the Dallas Burn (MLS: now called FC Dallas), played for the Raleigh Capital Express (USL), Charleston Battery (USL), and the Hampton Roads Mariners (USL). Accolades include A-League All-Star, Raleigh Express Defender of the Year, and USL Conference Champions with the Charleston Battery.

“Darren is the missing link for us in the Boys National Programming that we offer. It’s simple, he’s one of the best in the country and we’re excited that he is going to be working with us”, said Chief Executive Office Thomas Finlay. “The boys ECNL programming at the club will be stronger moving forward. Warham attended Lynn University where he played 4 years on the men’s soccer team. During his collegiate career, he became a 2x Academic All-America, 3x All-America, 2x Lynn Player of Year, Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year, and 4x All South Region. Warham eventually graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports and Recreation Management. He is happily married to his wife Erin for 24 years, with their 3 kids, ages 22, 19, and 16.

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Hires Erika Duncan as Assistant Coach to USL W League Team and Girls ECNL Staff

Duncan to help lead Independence women during inaugural USL W League Season and propel Girls ECNL program to new heights

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 5 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence and Charlotte Independence Soccer Club today named Erika Duncan as Assistant Coach to Charlotte’s newest women’s pre-professional soccer team. In her new role, Duncan will also work with the Girls ECNL Regional League North Teams. Previously, she was the Head Coach of the U19 Girls West Virginia United USL Academy Team and assisted with the U19 Boys at the same skill level.

"Erika is fantastic, she'll make an immediate impact on our players, staff and club," said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “Our game is definitely being upped with the addition of Erika in our Girls ECNL program and W League. Really looking forward to seeing her coach and develop within our environment."

Duncan worked for West Virginia Soccer Club girl’s academy since 2011. Most recently, she was the West Virginia Soccer Association Girl’s Competitive Coach of the Year for 2021. As Head Coach, the Girls U19 were National President’s Cup Finalist and East Regional President’s Cup Champions in 2021. Duncan also coached teams to State Cup Championships in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2019. During her time at West Virginia Soccer Club, she was the Assistant Head Coach for 7 years for the Marshall University Women’s Soccer team.

“I am so grateful to Charlotte Independence and Thomas Finlay for this amazing opportunity to join such an established and prestigious club,” said Duncan. “The vision and culture of the organization is exactly what I was looking for. I am excited and eager to get started!”

Duncan played NCAA Division l soccer at Marshall University and is considered one of the most decorated athletes to step into the women’s soccer program. She still holds records for most career goals (23), second with most game-winners (8), and tied for most consecutive matches with a goal (4). She has the third-most career points (54) and posted back-to-back campaigns with the second-most goals scored in a season (9 in 2008 and 2009). Her success as an athlete did not go without notice as she became All-Conference USA second team (2009, 2010), Conference USA Player of the Week (2011), National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-region second team (2010), and four-year Deans List Scholar (2007-2011).

"The addition of Erika to our staff as an Assistant Coach is very exciting for many reasons. It is awesome to have another woman on staff with both youth and college coaching experience," said Robyn Horner, Head Coach of the Charlotte Independence USL W League Team. “In addition to this, she was very successful as a player not only in college, but as a youth international as well with Scotland.”

Duncan’s journey truly began at home in Easthaven, Scotland, UK. Here, she played for Scotland’s’ U17’s and U19’s. She competed in the European Championship and made the Scotland Women’s National Team. In 2004, She played for the Newburgh Ladies F.C, Scotland professional team for 3 years before she came to the states for college where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and continued to graduate school where when she earned a Master of Science in Sports Administration.

Urban to bring experience in developing and implementing curriculum in youth boys and girls programs.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 25 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club(CISC) today named Bill Urban as the North Meck Youth Academy Director for Boys and Girls. Previously, he was the Development Director for NASA and Tophat NTH Soccer Club. The development of an athlete is important when the correct curriculum and training is implemented. This includes proper communication at all levels between athletes and coaches. Urban noticed that getting an athlete to play soccer early can have a major impact on their personal development. It is why he took initiatives in developing programs in every role he has been in. It shows he has the eagerness to contribute to our community and focus to enhance the soccer experience for our athletes.

“Our goal in hiring a Youth Academy(YA) Director was to find a person who has demonstrated the same values and commitment to player development as CISC”, said Director of Coaching Youth Academy John Tart. “At the same time, we wanted someone who would embrace the challenge to lead and grow the YA Program while enhancing the experience for our members. That person is Bill Urban. Bill’s leadership experience will be a tremendous addition to our YA Program. We are excited to welcome Bill as he joins the club family of Directors.

While Urban served as Development Director, he was the Head Coach for the Girls Academy 2005 and 2009 Georgia Navy teams at Tophat in Atlanta. His attention to detail and the importance of an athlete’s development is why he has held titles Director of Coaching, Professional Staff Coach, Academy Director, and Technical Director. He has the vision that includes a heavy emphasis on technical training, both individual, pressure-free activities and in small-sided activities where variables of time, space and opposition are employed to further development and strengthen decision-making for athletes. What this community is getting is a leader of men and women. Someone who is ready to think big and the ability to communicate it to existence.

Not only does Urban have the experience as a professional, but he also knows what it’s like to grow up playing the sport. Urban played for Davidson College Men’s Soccer team which plays Division l. He was also selected and played for the DeKalb County All-Star Team in 1987 and played for the Georgia Olympic Development Program in 1986 & 1987.

Urban graduated from Davidson College in 1991 earning a Bachelor of Arts in History. To continue his quest for knowledge, Urban received a Master of Library and Information Science from The University of Alabama in 2012.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 15 ^th , 2022) - The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club today named John Cullen as Director of Girls ECNL Pro Academy. Previously, he was the Head Coach for The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Women’s Soccer team where his overall record was 131-95 21 (.573). Cullen has an extensive history in player development within the Charlotte community. At every level throughout his career, he has shown a commitment to be successful in this endeavor. His investment in developing players is unquestioned by the notable accomplishments of girls and women within organizations he has worked for.

“I'm very excited to be named the Charlotte Independence Girls ECNL Pro Academy Director. I'm truly honored to step into this role and lead the next generation of players at the club to aspire to become the best version of themselves as players”, said John Cullen. “I want to thank Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay and Ellen Fiori Human Resources Director for sharing their vision of the club throughout the interview process and entrusting me with the task of taking the program to the next level. I feel our values and philosophies align and I'm excited to bring my 20 plus years of college coaching experience, passion, knowledge, and drive to challenge our players every day to fulfill their potential and become the best version of themselves as players and as a club.”

During his 13-years as the Women’s Head Coach, Cullen ushered numerous athletes into National All-Americans, Conference Player of the Year awardees, All-Conference and All-Region Selections.

Now, Cullen wants to take the next step in his career to focus on the development of athletes at the youth level. He wants to support girls and women in their vision to play at the collegiate level but wants to make sure they become successful as individuals above all. His commitment to scholastic achievement is illustrated as many of his players have become All-District/All-Region Academic Honorees, National Scholar All-America Award winners, and his teams have received Conference All-Academic Accolades. In Cullen, the club is welcoming a coach beyond the soccer field who takes pride in character development. He has an incredible scope of knowledge to build impactful relationships and guide these girls and women to reach their full potential not just as athletes, but as human beings.

“What an exciting time for our Girls ECNL Pro Academy program. Coach John Cullen is highly regarded in the soccer community, you don’t achieve the winningest records for two separate college programs by luck”, said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “There was so much that pulled us towards him. His views on program structure, club connectivity, college player preparation and overall player health and wellness was so encouraging. We simply wanted John to lead our programming moving forward. Before coming to UNC Charlotte in 2009, Cullen was the Head Coach at Catawba College for the Women’s Soccer Team where he boasted a 113-33-16 (.747) record. In 8 years, he was named Coach of the Year for the South Atlantic Conference 4 times, and NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year in 2005. His leadership propelled his teams to win 2 Conference Championships and took the Indians to 4 NCAA Division II Regionals and 2 Regional Finals.

Cullen graduated from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1996 where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He is currently married to his wife Terina where they have three daughters: Bailey, Peyton, and Reagan. We are thrilled to bring Cullen into the Independence family and cannot wait for him apply his wealth of experience to our club as Director of Girls ECNL Pro Academy.

CHARLOTTE INDEPENDENCE SOCCER CLUB CONTINUES COMMITMENT TO MENTAL HEALTH OF COMMUNITY BY EXTENDING PARNTERSHIP WITH SOCCER RESILIENCE

The shift towards healthier mental health norms requires openness, advocacy, and action within a community. Emotional wellness is a collective effort that will require teamwork.

CHARLOTTE, NC - March 7, 2022 - It is becoming prominent that sports organizations need to continue the commitment and development of their athletes beyond the field regarding mental health. To those battling with their mental health within our community, Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) and Soccer Resilience are here for you. Providing easy access resources to combat mental health is a start to a positive and successful path.

Last year, we announced the partnership to provide members of CISC access to the best training resources for mental health. 2022 begins year two of our partnership and our intention to build on the foundation laid last year.

Charlotte Independence will be providing access to Soccer Resilience FC for all players, parents, coaches, and staff involved with the club. Soccer Resilience FC is a comprehensive online tool that provides continuous mental fitness training, resources, and support for soccer players, coaches, and parents. Our team of specialists have developed a curriculum that includes expert videos, interviews, and downloadable material to help you stay mentally strong on and off the pitch. In addition to that, all players 12 and up, parents, and coaches will be provided monthly live Zoom interactive training sessions.

One by one, parking spots began to fill up as the community was brought together for another memory maker. As the cars were placed into park and engines turned off, kids in the backseat kicked their feet in excitement. Were they kicking the seats in front of them? Maybe, but remember, today was the first game of the season. An opportunity build new relationships and develop skills. Don’t you remember the first time you were excited for something as a kid? The feeling of being all sugared up and ready to run free. When finally given the opportunity, you took off, not looking back. We remember. We see it everyday and it never gets old.

Girls Complete in National League Showcase

Hello fellow Charlotte Independence Soccer Club fans. A few weeks ago, the US Youth Soccer National League held the National League Showcase in Tampa Florida from Februa ry 4-6. Our 03 North Composite team had the opportunity to play other team from other parts of the country. Each day bringing attention to detail and facing uncommon opponents.

Our girls came to play on Day 1 when facing off against MOBA Soccer Academy. The final score ended 2-0 in favor of CISC with goals coming from Brooke Van Epps and Haven Stanley.

Day 2 was going to put the girls’ skills to the test as they played against Penn FC who are the 2021 National Champions. This did not faze our girls one bit. Back and forth, each team having good spells of possession and chances to score. The atmosphere felt like a national title game because it felt neither team was going to give in. With 45 seconds to play Penn FC scored to make it 0-1. While a tough loss, the girls showed great character throughout.

With the sour taste still fresh in everyone’s mouth, it was the team’s mission to get back on track Sunday. Saying they were focused would be an understatement. Playing against the Alliance FC Academy, CISC won 3-1 with Brooke Van Epps (2) and Haven Stanley with the goals.

"It was great seeing the girls back in a game setting. They're competitors that love to challenge themselves” said Head Coach Toni. “This weekend helped us to see our strengths and weaknesses against teams that we didn't get to see during the regular season. Having a player come off the field saying, 'I learned something new from this game' is always encouraging as a coach because it means the team is taking steps in the right direction."

Charlotte Independence Soccer Club Promotes Matt Brown Director of Goalkeeping

CHARLOTTE, NC – February 17 ^th , 2022 - Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) has named Matt Brown Director of Goalkeeping. As Director of Goalkeeping, Matt will be responsible for the oversight and development of boys and girls goalkeepers throughout the club. As the Girls Goalkeeping Director, Matt has made significant contributions to the culture of goalkeeping at the club and will only further build on that foundation.

“Matt is an excellent Goalkeeping Director, one of the finest in the country. His experience and professionalism will provide our club with continued success for our GK’s”, said Chief Executive Officer Thomas Finlay. “The structure he has created with promoting Coach Robyn and Coach Blake is a strong example of his analytical and leadership skills in molding the GK program”.

“I am extremely grateful and humbled for this tremendous opportunity to head the goalkeeping department at such a fantastic club. First, I want to thank the leadership at the club for investing in such a pivotal position in the game,” said Matt Brown. “As a staff, we have put in a lot of time and effort to really solidify the Goalkeeper program as one of the top programs in the country and will continue to do so. We will push the boundaries when it comes to goalkeeper development on and off the field.” With Matt’s promotion, Robyn Horner, newly appointed Head Coach of the Charlotte Independence USL W League team, will be the Girls Goalkeeping Director. Blake Ellis has been promoted as the Boys Goalkeeping Director.

“Robyn has been instrumental in the development of the girls goalkeeper program over the past two years. She brings passion and experience from all levels of play. This experience will allow her to relate to the girls on a different level. I am really looking forward to seeing her influence on the players within the program,” said Matt. On the appointment of Blake to lead the boys goalkeepers, Matt said, “Blake has played a huge role in the success of the program during his time with the club. He brings great energy and dedication to his coaching. His knowledge of the game gives him the ability to really educate all of the players he meets. I am extremely excited to have him in this role at the club and look forward to seeing him take the boys program to an even higher level.”

The strength and commitment of these leaders will solidify the CISC goalkeeper culture. Sharing in this appointment, are Matt’s wife Brittany and 4 children, Lydia (9), Lila (6), Liam (5) and Liza (3).

A Day of Smiles, Laughter, and Happiness

It was a cold early morning, but it wasn’t the sun that was going to be warming up the day. This past Saturday, the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club held their Meet & Greet at Baily Road Park located in Cornelius, North Carolina. This was for all athletes participating in the recreational youth soccer league. This event also gave parents the ability to ask questions pertaining to the upcoming season. The most important question is, what is the significance of the Charlotte Independence Meet & Greet?

To answer this, we must look at what took place prior. During the morning, all coaches took part in a coach’s clinic led by Assistant Technical Director Jamie McLeod from the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association. “This gives our coaches an opportunity for field sessions, so they are preparing for the kids coming into practice next week. Gives them an opportunity to understand how to set up sessions and keep the players engagement up at all points of time”, said Huntersville Program Director Keith Poston. “We are having the Meet & Greet for players and parents who haven’t met their coaches face to face yet. Before getting onto the field next week, this gives them the ability to meet their team, so they don’t feel overwhelmed finding their coach come game day especially if this is their first year playing”.

“I have been playing soccer my whole life, but I never really got the push to try and teach what I learned from growing up playing soccer to other kids”, said first year U5/U6 Kings Head Coach Sal Kaddumi of the Revolution. “What I love about this is the structure and the support that was given to enable me to do that. To take the jump and go and teach and help grow the game but most importantly make sure the kids have fun”.

Players Represent America On The Big Stage

3 players Selected to Youth National Futsal teams, Compete in Spain

Charlotte Independence recently had three of their own travel to Spain to represent the Women’s Futsal team. Paige Santos, Alena Dudan, and Sophia Pustorino all had the honor of traveling to Madrid and competing at the highest level. After speaking with the three girls, they all shared a common thought, it was a life changing experience that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Sophia had the honor of being named captain of her team and demonstrated qualities that directly intertwine with the club’s values with Sophia herself saying “The biggest honor was being named captain of the US youth futsal national team.”. Another common theme the three girls shared was the travel. The girls were all lucky enough to visit the home of Atlético Madrid, The Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Paige herself specifically found the visit special saying “visiting places like the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium where Atletico de Madrid plays are always the highlights of these trips”. All three girls not only were able to maintain the competitive levels they demonstrate at the club, but they also showed the character we seek for in everyone that is apart of our club. We are proud of these three and can’t wait to see what they have in store for the future!

Rusty Scarborough will retire from a lifetime of commitment to youth soccer in 2022!

The community is thankful for the time Rusty has spent with us at the club and wish him the very best in his retirement.

On his decision to retire, Rusty Scarborough, “After 41 years in the soccer profession, I have decided to retire and am excited for the next journey in my life. I have had the privilege to meet so many great professionals along the way, and the staff at Charlotte Independence will definitely hold a space in my heart. I would like to thank Thomas Finlay for his trust in me to join the club. His guidance and friendship have helped me be successful, and I appreciate all he does for this great club. The last 34 plus months have been an enjoyable journey. From the club’s Executive Staff, Administrative Staff and to all the coaches I have met in the club, I would like to say thank you for the positive experience. I would also like to express to the ECNL Staff of Charlotte Independence that I believe you are second to none in this game. Your dedication and work ethic to provide the optimal environment for all of our players to reach their highest level is appreciated. I believe the families (players and parents) in our program to be the some of the best I have had the pleasure to be around. I appreciate all your support along the way. I wish the club all the success it deserves and look forward to watching and being proud of all you will accomplish in the years to come.”

BRAD YOUNG FORMER DISCOVERIES SC PLAYER PROMOTED TO FULL TIME

The club wishes Brandon Anselmo the best with his journey in Finance.

We are delighted to welcome Brad Young, who has been working with the CISC Youth Academy in York County, to the clubs Full Time staff beginning in the New Year. Brad, who was previously a player with Discoveries SC, has had a big impact on the players and staff during his short period as a coach with the club. Charlotte Independence are delighted to have him play a more prominent figure within the club moving forward and see him as someone who will have a positive impact on and off the field in the future.

On accepting the new role within the club, Brad said “I’m excited to be coming back home to join the Charlotte Independence staff. I know what it means to play in this area as an athlete, and I’m eager to work with this soccer community in a different role.”

“We’re delighted to add Brad to the club. He is committed to the clubs values and development philosophy. He will play an important role in the club for years to come. Please welcome Brad to the Independence when you see him,” said Tom McEnery Boys Director CISC South. “As we welcome Brad it’s important to recognize a good friend and coach, Brandon Anselmo. Brandon has decided to change direction in his career and will relocate to Philadelphia and the financial world. Over the last few years, Brandon has played a significant role in the clubs transition from the merger and membership experience through Covid. An excellent professional we know Brandon will be successful in many years to come”.

Brandon began his association with the club as a player, progressing through the Development Academy pathway with the Carolina Rapids. Winthrop university became his home for his collegiate soccer career, where he was part of the 2015 Championship team and graduated 2019.

On leaving the club Brandon said, ”I want to thank the club for everything you did for me in the past two years. I have been given one of the best experiences I will have in my life. 18/19 BOYS ECNL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 2021

Congratulations to our U19 boys for winning the ECNL National Championship! They battled and secured the championship using the values of communication and competition. CISC was tied 0-0 with the San Diego Surf at halftime. At the beginning of the second half, Logan Gilley was able to burst past a defender and into the box where he would meet brother Chase for a swift pass and ultimately the kick to put CISC ahead. With this newfound momentum, Independence was able to reign in on their defense to prevent the San Diego Surf from advancing and bring home the National Championship.
