Shane Carew

Boys Director of College Recruitment

Shane Carew serves as the Boys Director of College Recruitment here at the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club where he is responsible for coaching and college recruitment education. Carew brings 20 years of extensive experience as a player and coach, and prior to joining Independence Soccer Club, was the assistant coach on Stanford men’s soccer staff, helping guide the Cardinal to the NCAA College Cup for the fourth time in five years. Shane is no stranger to college coaching, having stints as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay, and as the assistant at both San Jose State and Elon University. During his time in San Jose, Carew led both the U16/U18 Academy teams for the San Jose Earthquakes as well as the PDL affiliate for San Jose, the Burlingame Dragons, as the assistant coach. In terms of youth soccer, he spent 4 years as the Executive Director of Coaching for FC Carolina Alliance before moving on to the college game. Throughout his time as a coach, Carew has coached multiple players that have gone on to play in the MLS, including Tanner Beason (San Jose Earthquakes), Corey Baird (Real Salt  Lake and USA), Danny Lovitz (Nashville and USA) to name just a few. As a player, Carew was selected in 2003 to represent the Irish National Team in that year's World University Games in Daegu, South Korea. He played professionally for Shelbourne FC and Killkenny City in Ireland before ending his playing career in the United States at the Long Island Roughriders. Born in Ireland, Shane came to the United States to play and graduate from UNC Charlotte in 2003 where he was a standout for the 49ers men's soccer team earning three All-Conference USA selections. In terms of coaching licenses, Carew has obtained his USSF A License as well as UEFA B License.
