It's a Wrap: Independence 3v3 Tournament Series

August 9, 2022

It was a soft overcast day as the sun rose from the horizon. The birds chirping, the breeze blowing, and most importantly, the children getting ready for Charlotte Independence 3v3 Tournament Series Championship Weekend. This was to conclude a trilogy of events that took place the past couple of months. One final day for those that won before. One final day to showcase each players’ skillset and walk away with being called one thing. A Champion.

The morning had all boys competing against one another. Some played a Best of 3 series to advance into a Final. Others played and advanced based on point differential. What started out as a nice 72 degrees soon grew into the 80s. Testing the heart, determination, and communication of each team. While the boys went back and forth, parents and the community cheered from the sidelines. Halftime allowed the players to recharge with drinking cold water. It was like Michael Jordan's “Secret Stuff” that he drank at halftime when the Looney Tunes and him faced off against the Monsters. For the players, drinking the icy water provided newfound energy and a competitive edge to go out and give it their all. In some games, you had teammates turn into foes as they had to play one another. It was heartwarming to see that after the conclusion of the games, they put the score aside and hugged one another. Showcasing true character and sportsmanship that any coach, family member, and community be proud of. Even though Champions and Finalists were named by 1:30 PM, this did not indicate that the show was over.

One by one, more cars filled the parking lot. Excitement and laughter filled the air as the girls jumped out of the cars and walked down with their parents to meet with their teams. If you thought the boys were competitive, the girls brought the toughness right out of the gate. Soccer balls were flying back and forth as if it was Ping Pong. Finally, one slips through and a team scores. Another girl kicked a rocket soaring through the air making it for a goal. It was at this moment that thunder was heard as if the ball hitting the net created it. We had to temporarily stop gameplay for a weather delay do to lightning. After the brief delay, we were able to resume play although not for long. The clouds darkened and the giant footsteps got closer and closer. Zeus then hurled his lightning rod from Mt. Olympus into the sky. The decision was made to end the event. While no champions were crowned, the safety for the players, parents, coahces, and this community come first.

We want to say thank you to everyone who participated these past several weeks. Thank you coaches for taking the time to help each player become a better athlete. Guiding them through each game and teaching the fundamentals of what it means to be a team. As the fall season approaches, we as a club look forward to seeing the continued growth of each player and what accomplishments they may see. Until next time!
